Hiring salespeople from a competitor isn’t always the best strategy! Here's what I’ve learned from building early-stage go-to-market functions: - Top salespeople choose new roles based on insights from strategic conversations with their customers and partners - Many of the best sellers will only consider switching to 1 or 2 competitors, and only if those companies offer a clear differentiator - Understandably they are concerned about their credibility. Switching companies means they could appear inconsistent, suddenly telling customers the solution they used to promote isn’t the best anymore - When considering a competitor, top sellers are always ready to explain how this move would benefits their customers and why their current company's product roadmap no longer meets expectations - If you’re thinking of hiring a competitor’s rep, ask them why they believe customers need your solution and why they feel this move won’t harm their credibility. Don’t expect them to share specific account details though In summary: Prioritize hiring someone who truly understands their customers' present and future needs, not just someone from a competitor. And, don't rely on hiring reps who claim they can “walk you into accounts” unless you’re offering something genuinely disruptive in the market and they can explain why...
