🔥#FNWEPresearch: The 2020 article "Evacuating a First Nation Due to Wildfire Smoke: The Case of Dene Tha’ First Nation" by Kyla Mottershead, Dr. Tara McGee, and Dr. Amy Cardinal Christianson, highlights the critical role of leadership in community resilience, especially considering evacuations are rapidly carried out under uncertain and rapidly changing conditions. The study of the Taché wildfire evacuation demonstrates how effective local leadership can drive resilience. Led by the volunteer Director of Emergency Management (DEM), with support from the fire chief and Dene Tha' First Nation’s Chief and Council, their leadership quickly mobilized resources and coordinated evacuation logistics, including organizing transportation, setting up a reception center, registering evacuees, and arranging accommodations. The DEM also acted as a liaison between the community and external organizations, ensuring smooth communication and fostering a sense of agency among community members, which is vital for resilience. Additionally, the establishment of a band-operated reception center helped develop the capacity of band employees and volunteers because they became familiar with the operation and logistics of an evacuation. For more insights on this and the factors that shaped the Dene Tha’ First Nation’s decision-making during the July 2012 wildfire smoke evacuation and its impact on the community, read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gmMtucsY Additionally, we want to share a video showcasing the preparedness initiatives undertaken by the Dene Tha' following their 2012 fire experience. These efforts were aimed at strengthening the community’s resilience to potential future disasters.
