The province of Ontario only has nine years left until landfills reach their capacity. Some experts say the issue isn't just the shortage of landfills but the amount of waste we produce. #waste #landfills #methane #wastetoenergy #ghgemissions https://lnkd.in/gFMf3WjV

Southern Water, one of the largest water companies in the UK, plans to tanker supplies from Norway’s fjords to cover potential water shortages in England. That England, one of the wettest countries in the world (where it hasn’t stopped raining for 18 months), needs to consider these measures should concern us all. But just two years ago, the country came very close to running out of water, in the middle of one of the worst droughts in English history. Countries all over the world need to invest heavily to improve water efficiency (e.g., avoiding leaks, building reservoirs, supporting more efficient water management and irrigation systems, etc.). Many believe that water conflicts will lead to wars. It is not hard to imagine that scenario if our fallback plan is to tanker fresh water from one country to another. #transformation #water #sustainability

English water companies have published a plan to remove 150,000 annual sewage spills by 2030. Water UK has called on the government to deliver 10 commitments: ✔ A review of the Bathing Water Regulations 2013 ✔An ending to the automatic right of housing developers to connect to overloaded sewers ✔To assess giving water companies the right to repair defective drains on private property ✔A ban on the manufacture and sale of plastic wet wipes ✔The use of fines to improve the environment ✔An assessment of the role of highway drainage as a source of environmental harm ✔To assess giving water companies the right to improve drainage systems on private property to reduce impermeable areas connected to the combined sewer network ✔To assess giving water companies the right to discharge clean rainwater back into water courses ✔Consult on making water companies statutory consultees on planning applications ✔Ending operator self-monitoring. David Henderson, CEO of Water UK, said: "This the first plan in the world to set out such a detailed and expansive programme for upgrading overflows right across the country. In just five years, it cuts annual spills into rivers and coasts by 150,000." Is it "world leading"? I was so very excited when I saw that this bullet-point was included in the plan: ✔An assessment of the role of highway drainage as a source of environmental harm But when you drill-down a bit, it actually refers to the harm caused by highway drainage entering combined sewers, and highway authorities pushing surface water to the combined sewer by preventing connection to their system, thus increasing the volume and frequency of the storm overflow. There is still no acknowledgement of the harm caused by the pollutants in highway runoff that are conveyed into the water environment via water-company surface-water sewers. We must plod on, highlighting the pollution from highway runoff at every opportunity until it takes its place in every discussion about water pollution.

The importance of addressing leaky pipes in our sewage systems cannot be overstated. Abin Antony, the manager for policy, planning, and analysis for liquid waste services, highlights a crucial point: the significant cost disparity between upsizing sewer pump stations and wastewater treatment plants compared to fixing leaky pipes at the source. Antony emphasizes that opting for the latter, more cost-effective solution not only saves money but also ensures fairness among all members who would otherwise bear the burden of increased costs. By focusing on repairing leaky pipes, not only do we tackle the immediate issue efficiently, but we also pave the way for long-term benefits. Delaying the need to expand sewage treatment plants due to population growth becomes a viable strategy when we address the root cause of the problem. This approach not only saves resources but also contributes to a more sustainable and equitable system for all involved. Antony's insights shed light on the practical and prudent path forward in managing our liquid waste services. Prioritizing the maintenance and repair of leaky pipes emerges as a cost-effective and equitable solution that benefits both the community and the environment in the long run. This approach needs to be embraced to ensure the efficient and sustainable management of our sewage systems.

In Brisbane Breached I concluded that new dams in the #Brisbane #River catchment - both upper and lower - would not be tenable. I was therefore very taken by this headline. None of the suggestions are in either catchment. Indeed not in South East #Queensland at all. #rivers #creeks #floods #flooding #dams #water #waterpolicy #politics #qldpol #qldvotes https://lnkd.in/g-Qsu-pM

Water is now being managed by paying for not using it. At a cost roughly equal to the foregone sales revenue that would otherwise be shouldered by ratepayers, the Administration is making it financially neutral (ish) to not use/sell water, thereby supporting conservation in a way that otherwise would not remotely pencil. In principle, the right way to do this is to pay each water agency a price equal to its separate (and wildly different) costs, but in the real world, when one agency has senior water rights and uses 75 percent of the flow, and the smaller water agencies have to take half a loaf, something is better than nothing. As the rainy season looms, the need to clear silt from water storage and process dams has become critical. Silt build-up drastically reduces storage capacity, risking overflow and severe environmental damage. Specialty dewatering pump company, IPR (Integrated Pump Rental) urges operators to act swiftly and desilt their facilities to ensure they can handle the anticipated rainwater. According to IPR Managing Director Lee Vine, many dams are already nearing full capacity due to accumulated silt, posing significant risks if not properly maintained. #roundtheclockdewatering #hasslefreedewatering #submersiblepumps #dewateringpumps #dewatering #pumprental https://lnkd.in/dsAns8M5
