'When I had paving I would never sit here, but now it’s a garden, it’s cooler in summer and in the spring, it’s lovely.' Great feature in the Guardian highlights the impact of removing paving in cities on #overheating. https://lnkd.in/ec2DvpWb

What a phenomenal initiative! This expands upon the old idea of “wildflower gardens” and “green belts” and urban gardens/farms and “parkway connectors”. Farmers have long left “tree islands” in fields and hedgerows as boundary markers - even stone walls encourage wildlife flora and fauna. In the Tropics, we have 365 days of growing season and Singapore has the wonderful 30x30 and urban farmers and “gardens in a city” processes (although I still preferred the older, broader, “garden city” ideal). Certainly, with the complex infrastructure of our Little Red Dot, securing natural oases amongst our urban sprawl and concrete jungle takes some planning (and policy change to reconsider the rigid limitations on picking roadside fruit or growing in pots in common corridors or establishing neighbourhood community farm plots in estates etc). But, for all the positive effects (drainage improvements, heat island reduction, shade, the possibility of local harvests on multiple scales, the psychological benefits of green spaces etc) surely it’s worth the effort? Our glorious skyscraping architecture with increasingly green facades built into the plans (rooftop gardens, natural airflow, solar paneling and green walls etc) and the farm-to-fork concept companies “springing up” (like my old friends at Grobrix ) all over are testament to the possibilities before us, and every little bit helps! #greenery #urbanlandscape #urbanagriculture #environment #citygardens

Interesting article from The Guardian about the Dutch removing hard (impermeable) surfacing from their gardens…. Needs to be carefully balanced in newbuild to ensure satisfactory accessibility but a helpful reminder to think before laying all that Tarmac, block paving or resin ground aggregate. #landscaping #spatiauk.
