As a kid, I dreamed of being a teacher. I didn’t have a ton of female role models outside of teaching or nursing, so I followed one of those paths and earned a degree in education. (In case you’re wondering what grade I taught, I didn’t. Ever. That’s a story for another time.) We recently had a client who came to us after reading Everybody Matters. As a consultant at Chapman & Co., I’ve worked with industries ranging from manufacturing to hospitality, healthcare, and finance, but this client stands out because they’re in education—a field that hits close to home for me. This superintendent took inspiration from Everybody Matters and partnered with Chapman & Co. Leadership Institute to create a Truly Human Leader program tailored for their school district. During our follow-up call, he shared what he’s done to embody the idea that people want to know that who they are and what they do matters. He introduced the “Devil Dog Award,” a peer-nominated recognition program celebrating team members who embody kindness, dedication, a strong work ethic, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others. After telling us about the award, he also said, "I feel like I’m not doing enough” and that "I’m no Bob Chapman." Not enough? The difference he’s made is real. By sharing Everybody Matters, starting a book club, creating the Devil Dog Award, and adjusting his leadership style, he’s planting seeds that will grow for years. ‘Enough’ isn’t about checking boxes – it’s about consistent effort and he’s living it every day. I’m sharing this as a reminder to all of us that comparison is the thief of joy. There is only one Bob Chapman, there’s also only one YOU. A small yet powerful way you can show up as a Truly Human Leader is by recognizing people in a way that makes them feel seen, heard and valued. #everybodymatters #trulyhumanleadership #recognition

What does it take to be truly accountable? Does it mean laying everything out on the table? In my view, it goes beyond mere disclosure. It's about taking responsibility for our actions, decisions, and their outcomes. It's about standing behind what we do, taking ownership and openly acknowledging both successes and setbacks. Being accountable means embracing transparency as a foundation, but it's more about fostering a culture where honesty and integrity prevail.
