Last week Cornwall Chamber of Commerce hosted an excellent seminar on Venture Capital for scale-up companies. Cornish companies and Venture Capital have not always had an easy relationship. But with enormous opportunity in the region, plenty of money in the UK looking for a home, a favourable tax framework and few grants, now is the time to get familiar with the private finance landscape for attracting investment to fuel growth. Chamber CEO ✌️John Brown introduced Octopus Investments, Octopus Ventures and Adam Brooks (DipFA), and we heard from a couple of successful Octopus fundees, including the extraordinary DRIFT Energy Ltd (this is worth a watch: https://drift.energy/). A wealth of wisdom & inspiration was imparted – 5 key takeaways: 1.    VCs are looking for ideas that will change the world. You’ll need to demonstrate vision, ambition, execution and the opportunity to scale the business rapidly. VCs expect a return of x10. 2.    VCs predominantly invest in the people and then the technology. Businesses scaling-up rapidly need fast-growing teams.  [An entrepreneur may not be a good manager. A manager of five people isn’t necessarily a good manager of 20 people. Someone who leads a team of 20 today, may struggle with 100 people next year]. 3.    You’re competing for capital with the best-in-class from around the world, so you need to be sure your technology is sufficiently advanced to stop competitors from anywhere. 4.    Try to connect with VCs via connections rather than cold. Engineer things so you are meeting with as many potential investors as possible. Get out of the office, out of the county. Out of the country perhaps (e.g. Cornwall Trade & Investment mission to Slush). Engineer things so you can meet as many people as possible. But also there is power in the network of Cornwall.
