We have all heard the quips and sound bites "Starting a company is hard" Well, yes that is true. It's a magical and ulcer inducing time. Early stage companies are madness, but the belief of possibilities is what keeps everyone going. Very few companies gain traction in their first years, but if you start seeing some growth and momentum, the Inc. Magazine 5000 list becomes a goal. Zambezi first made the list in 2011, after barely surviving the 2008/2009 financial crisis. Coming out of that, we doubled down on focusing on sports and entertainment brands and we went BOOM! Zambezi continued to be on the list in 2012,2013 and 2014. Chris Raih and I had two kids during this time and it was a blur. But a very fun one in hindsight. Okay, now you are growing! You've made your mark in the industry. There is rapid growth for a multi-year time period. While starting is hard, scaling is a whole different ball game. You are so energized by growth, but quickly realize most of the "things" have to change. People (What? I can do it better) Process (Why? I can do it faster) Strategy (Why change it? It's WORKING!) Cash (Holy Shit! Where did it go?!?!) Zambezi has gone through two different scaling periods (2011-2014, 2019-2024). First period was transitioning from a small business to a midsize business. Second period was building new business units in FIN (production studio) and SCALE (media). Through both of those periods, we needed to have completely different business approaches. It was messy and hard. Main difference is during the second period, we invested heavily in coaching. DO THIS! Also for early stage growth companies, previous success is usually the hindrance for continued scaling. How can you change the special sauce that made this company SOAR? It's very hard once you have had a taste of success to not rinse and repeat. But you can't - you need to continue to innovate. Okay, you've grown significantly! Now you have to sustain it Sustained growth is the hardest. It requires bottling up the magic of success to make that an everyday occurrence. No more flash in the pan. The business is at a scale that requires foresight, investment and flawless execution. It's a whole different business strategy, which again requires a retooled approach. Over the 18-year history at Zambezi, our rapid growth periods follow a few years of sustained growth. This has allowed us to acclimate to the growth, get the foundation set and then implement the next growth strategy. Zambezi was on the Inc 5000 list in 2019, 2023 and proud to announce THIS YEAR in 2024. Our team has done something very few companies can do - continue to build and grow a sustainable company. PM+M are the Best In The North West 2024. It’s award time! 🏆 I was nervous this morning because Eleanor Smith and I wanted to be there to personally congratulate PM+M with its newest accolade. This is an award that comes from the employees themselves - you can feel it, it’s the buzz around the place and people look happy to be there. I didn’t need to be nervous. Anthem Engagement surveyed organisations in the region, and compared them against the others to see who was the ‘Best in the North West’. The applications from companies started from November 2023. PM+M Solutions for Business LLP have achieved the highest engagement score across the board, exceeding this year’s benchmark score with a score of 94.1%. In the hustle and bustle of daily life, it’s easy to get caught up in the never-ending stream of challenges and forget to pause, take a breath, and celebrate our achievements. Asset Based Consulting is thrilled to have attended the 2024 NSITE/ National Industries for the Blind/NAEPB Training Conference and Expo! It was an incredible opportunity to learn, connect, and explore how partnerships can drive real impact in changing the landscape for the Blind/Low Vision community. We dove into real challenges, such as: *How do we remain competitive as the labor workforce shifts? *How can we create frameworks and training programs that remain top-notch and continue to add value as technology advances and production landscapes change? *How do we set up our employees for all-around success, giving them the confidence and competence to thrive in an integrated, inclusive workforce—with opportunities for up-skilling, retention, and growth? The conversations are already happening. We were blown away by the collaborative partnerships and thought leaders who shared best practices, discussed innovations in marketing and sales, explored shifts in skill development, and looked into newer markets like #CertifiedAccessibilityTesters. There is a need to pursue new market opportunities by being responsive and proactive—asking, How can we help? What do you need to be successful? The need for a culture shift is clear. It’s not about pulling at heartstrings—it’s about educating and reshaping the way the world sees the contributions of Blind/Low Vision employees. Whether in school districts, hospitals, or corporate spaces, it’s time to highlight the backstory behind the products and services we use every day. You might believe there's something meaningful between your organization and them— > shared goals, > a sense of community, > a bond. I've been there. I used to think the same way about all my professional connections. But here’s the truth: That connection might not be as strong as we think.
