In March 2022, I was promoted as the Director of Marketing at Simform. Since then I have faced a lot of challenging situations. As I reflect upon this brief journey so far, here’s what I believe makes a great Director/Head of Marketing: [1] Facilitate growth When operations are smooth, the Head of Marketing can do their real job: Facilitate Growth. You need to quickly move yourself out of handling every operational problem. [2] Developing team members As your team matures, spend your time developing and lifting the team members. Whenever you establish processes or best practices, hand them over to senior members. [3] Change gears effectively The majority of your time should be spent on coaching and mentoring your team and advocating new initiatives with senior executives. [4] Hiring Once you can afford it, hire specialists for each aspect of marketing that is critical for your business (demand generation, content marketing, SEO, social media etc.). Ideally, hire experienced specialists from companies that have already done what you want to do. [5] Time frugality The number one leading indicator of a company's marketing success is how little time you spend troubleshooting and doing execution tasks. I use Eisenhower Matrix for task prioritization. [6] Building career roadmaps Defining and writing down roles, career levels, and goals is always worth it. People want to know what is expected of them and where do they stand. [6] Elevate good behavior As a leader, you will see more impact from elevating good behavior than from punishing bad behavior. [7] Listening is more important Always speak as confidently as if you knew everything. But always listen as carefully as if you knew nothing. [8] Difficult conversations To measure your own growth as a leader, pay attention to the frequency with which you are willing to have difficult conversations. I generally have one every alternate day!! ************************************************************ That’s it for now. Personally, I am nowhere near to being an ideal Director of Marketing. I'm learning something new each day. #digitalmarketing #teambuilding

Don’t hire a Head of marketing again ! I noticed a lot of companies hiring and firing a marketing director each season of the year… Like our job isn’t already hard enough… You give us no resources, minimal budget and expect us to bring you clients out of tin air… The truth is you over promised investors and now that you got the money you are stuck… Us marketing directors can’t just magically bring you clients… Clients are not numbers they are actually people who say yes to you and your offer… And to make them say yes we need to reach them… Convince them… Connect with them… If you can’t understand this Please don’t hire a head of marketing again. Some examples of when a scale-up business may want to consider hiring a #chiefmarketingofficer are when a business: ✅ Wants to expand into new markets ✅ Wants to increase market share ✅ Is launching new products or services ✅ Needs #brand differentiation ✅ Requires improved #customer acquisition and retention ✅ Lacks marketing expertise internally In this blog post, we will explore what the role entails, when to hire, and the different approaches to successfully hiring a CMO. #recruitment https://lnkd.in/eJQfa5rH

Hot take: If you’re a marketer for a Fortune 500 company, you know nothing about growing a small business. The marketing strategies to go from $1-$10M… Are different from the marketing strategies needed to go from $10-$100M, $100M-$250M, and $250M+ If you’re hiring a CMO, marketing director, head of marketing, etc… Make sure they have demonstrated proficiency in growing companies from your current level of revenue to your goal revenue.
