On October 3rd, 1990, two different worlds merged into one, marking a historic moment of peace, freedom, and collaboration. This day also serves as a personal reminder of the value of connections. Without this unity, my startup NUNOS, based in the West, and greenhub solutions GmbH from East Germany might never have crossed paths. Together, we are working toward a sustainable future, driven by innovation and the shared vision of a circular economy. German Unity Day is more than just history – it's a celebration of how collaboration drives progress. The Portuguese city of Braga is a finalist in the #iCapitalAwards'2024 as a Rising Innovative City jointly with Linz (AT) and Oulu (FI). Congratulations Braga! The 2024 FIRST Global (IFCA) Challenge in Athens was nothing short of magical. ✨ Standing in the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympic games took place, I couldn’t help but feel the immense weight of history blending with the boundless potential of the future. This wasn’t just another event—it was a global movement. 🌍 More than 190 countries came together, not to compete in sports, but to race toward a better, more sustainable world through innovation and technology. These young minds didn’t just build robots; they built bridges—across cultures, languages, and continents. Watching them work side by side, we saw firsthand how technology can unite us, how creativity and collaboration can transcend borders, and how hope for a brighter future can inspire action. The energy was beyond words. From the electrifying Black Eyed Peas performance to the inspiring moments of teamwork and perseverance, it was a celebration of what we can achieve when we come together with a shared purpose. I’ve never been prouder to be a part of something so powerful. These young innovators reminded us all of what’s possible when we dream big, work together, and believe in a better future. The European Commission has revealed the winners of the 2024-25 European Capital of Innovation Awards (#iCapital), celebrating a decade of recognising cities that lead the way in delivering #innovative solutions for their citizens. This year's top prizes, funded under the EU research and innovation programme Horizon Europe, were awarded to the cities of Braga and Torino. According to the European Commission, #Braga has developed a range of innovative solutions, from tech-based clusters to cultural and creative industries, and established a strong innovation #ecosystem with a focus on #collaboration and #inclusivity.  The award ceremony took place on 13 November 2024 in Lisbon at the Web Summit, one of the world's largest technology events. Commissioner Iliana Ivanova handed the awards to cities that have embedded innovation into daily urban life, advancing sustainable, inclusive, and resilient communities. The ceremony brought together the mayors from winning cities and past iCapital winners.  Braga won the award in the European Rising Innovative City category, while Torino won in the European Capital of Innovation category. We’re still reeling from the excitement after last week’s event and are thrilled to have had Isidro Laso, Senior Official at the European Innovation Council,  deliver an insightful keynote on "Innovation as an Existential Challenge: Deep Tech and the EU's Innovation Gap."  Isidro emphasized that innovation is indeed an existential challenge for the EU. As deep tech transforms industries, Europe risks falling behind due to limited funding and support compared to regions like the US. 🌍 Laso highlighted the importance of public investment in deep tech to bridge this gap, aiming to accelerate EU innovation and ensure that groundbreaking technologies reach the market. 🚀
