Nearly 1.5 billion people, making up around 19% of the world’s population, are exposed to substantial risks from severe flood events. I am proud of our flood forecasting team at Google Research who marked a big milestone earlier this week, publishing a study in Nature that compares our AI model to the global state-of-the-art flood forecasting system. https://lnkd.in/d648GqEN This publication demonstrates how AI breakthroughs can significantly improve the accuracy and lead time of flood forecasts. By leveraging AI, we are able to predict riverine floods even in areas that our model has not been trained on, and forecasts in previously data-scarce regions of Africa and Asia are now comparable to those in Europe. For too long, accurate global flood forecasting was unattainable, leaving vulnerable communities (especially in developing countries) without life-saving information. Today, we're proud to showcase how breakthrough AI technologies are closing this gap. Our system delivers reliable flood predictions across 80 countries and counting. Learn more about our impactful journey, from early research in 2018 to today, and see how we're planning to further increase our impact https://lnkd.in/dn-WscaV

AI enhances flood warnings but cannot erase risk of disaster When floods ripped through parts of Europe in September, the scale of the destruction took people by surprise. The intense rains should not have, because those had been predicted by sophisticated forecasting systems enhanced with artificial intelligence. But forewarned did not mean forearmed. Though the rains were accurately predicted, the effects in the deluged areas were not - a fact that highlights the difficulties of dealing with ever more common extreme weather. AI has supercharged weather forecasting, using a range of statistical tools to analyse years of historical data and predict patterns, and at a lower cost than traditional numerical weather predictions. Floods are the most common natural disaster, and are responsible for roughly $50 billion in annual financial damages worldwide. The rate of flood-related disasters has more than doubled since the year 2000 partly due to climate change.
Large-scale global flood forecasting has been out of reach for a long time. That has left vulnerable communities particularly in developing countries cut off from potentially life-saving information. Today we showcase how breakthrough AI technologies can close the gap and provide reliable flood predictions around the world. The stakes for accurate flood forecasting are high: some 19% of the world population is directly exposed to substantial risks from severe floods. Flooding also exacts an immense material toll, causing around $50 billion in annual global economic damages. In our study published today in Nature we demonstrate how our AI model can significantly improve the accuracy and lead time of flood forecasts compared to the global state-of-the-art flood forecasting system. Thanks to AI, flood predictions in regions of Africa and Asia are now comparable to forecasts currently available in Europe. Our model on average also extends the reliability of currently-available global nowcasts from zero to five days. Learn more at: https://goo.gle/49bRqVG
