Outsourcing all revenue problems to a new hire sounds like a dream? Tom Glason thinks it’s a trap. He says "one of the biggest mistakes we see is hiring the wrong type of revenue leader based on the stage of the business. Does it still make sense if you're at 1M and you're trying to get to 5? We should talk about leader-stage fit as much as we talk about the mighty product-market fit. In every stage, there’s a delicate balance of being hands on, being a visionary leader, delegation and execution. Someone who has experience with your stage probably brings in the best cocktail. You know I’ve been talking to a few friends and collègues recently who wanted to switch industries... and they’re all being told the same thing... “Sorry your experience is great but not quite there yet...” without even a call or zoom... just a plain old auto-rejection letter. It got me thinking about my own experience which was tough because it seemed my past achievements didn’t count. After years in cosmetic sales management—leading teams of 100, managing multi-million dollar accounts, and consistently hitting sales targets—I moved into tech sales. Despite my leadership skills and success, I found it hard to be recognized because I lacked tech experience. Leadership, sales, and relationship building skills work in any industry. My strategic vision, adaptability, people management, and problem-solving abilities from cosmetics have been valuable in tech. However, many hiring managers overlooked these transferable skills and focused only on my lack of tech knowledge. As if I couldn’t easily learn when in cosmetics there were thousands of competitors literally right next to me. It’s frustrating when people don’t see how skills transfer. I know how to lead teams, hit targets, and increase retention—whether it’s beauty products or software. But I still faced the challenge of proving my worth in any new role.
