This Weekend’s Coffee Rant: Trust and Respect – The Foundations of Synergy Risk and liability are part of every business, every relationship, every farm. Success depends on two fundamental components: trust and respect. These qualities are interconnected yet distinct. Trust is built over time, creating confidence that others are aligned with us. Respect, on the other hand, reflects the value we place on their character, actions, and contributions. But can you trust someone without respecting them? It happens more often than we think—particularly in workplaces and, yes, even in farming. You might trust a vendor to deliver on time or an employee to follow through on tasks, but a lack of respect for how they approach their role can create tension. Over time, this disconnect breeds toxicity and threatens the foundation of collaboration. When trust and respect work in harmony, they create synergy—a transformative energy that elevates teams, businesses, and relationships. Think of it as the perfect balance between soil health and crop rotation. When they align, the entire system thrives. Teams begin to operate with an intuitive flow, much like a farm running at peak efficiency during harvest. Communication becomes seamless, and progress feels natural. I often reflect on my time with MEMA and fire rehab, where our team embodied this balance. Regardless of who was on duty, we worked as a well-oiled machine. Today, I strive for that same energy in other areas of my life, but I’ve learned it doesn’t happen by chance. It requires effort, humility, and the willingness to set egos aside. Trust builds over time, but respect is fragile. Like crops, it can be destroyed in an instant and requires immense effort to rebuild. Yet, when trust and respect coexist, they unlock something extraordinary—potential that surpasses the sum of individual contributions. As farmers, leaders, or community members, we must ask ourselves: *Am I contributing to this synergy? Am I fostering trust and respect in those around me?* These questions hold the key to success—not just for our relationships, but for the legacies we leave behind. Trust and respect are more than just ideals. They’re the fertile ground from which innovation, resilience, and collaboration grow. Let’s nurture them, for they’re the foundation of progress—on the farm, in the workplace, and in life.

Personally, I do not really 'enjoy' reading business books "𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘰 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘚𝘵𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘑𝘰𝘣𝘴 - 𝘐'𝘥 𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘥 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘒𝘭𝘢𝘺 𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘫𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘷𝘴" 🏀 🏀 🏀 However... I've recently read and enjoyed 'The Energy Bus' & 'The Five Dysfunctions of a Team'. Key takeaways below for anyone considering a read. Anyway, it's Christmas now.... Books can wait until next year. Back to the NBA reading. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 1) Positivity in a professional setting spreads like wildfire. 2) Life events happen and are out of your control. Your perception of these events is in your control. Only your perception can influence the outcome. E + P = O 3) If you're feeling stressed, take a 5 minute 'Thank you walk' thinking about the things you're grateful for. P.S. Thanks for the recommendation Janet Gray! 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝟱 𝗗𝘆𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀: 1) Disagreement & debate is healthy and necessary in order to move things forward (if handled professionally). It's extremely damaging to businesses if this doesn't happen. 2) Trust is imperative for a thriving team. 3) The team & results always has to come above personal goals.

HENRY FORD & HIS BUTCHER'S IDEA! What if we added to "Bring your kid" or "Bring your dog to work" day,  also "Bring a CEO to work" day. 2 strangers, Matjaž Cater and I got talking over in DMs yesterday. The amount of curiosity, respect, good listening we produced was inspiring. Then it hit me. I have no slightest idea about his industry and he about mine.  Yet, we get it each other as HUMANS.  Curious.  With values.  Knowleadgable.  Experienced. Have you ever heard the story of how FORD learned from butchers at their convention rather than his own competition? And by learning about a completely unrelated industry he got a revolutionary idea about his own? Wouldn't it be amazing if we had a pool of CEOs/OWNERS from all different industries and we would spend 1 day with them - and be their shadow! Asking all the possible questions about their idea, their values, how they solve challenges, how they self/master, how they lead, how they respond to their emoployees having challenges, listening to their convos in the office, see how they put together their offers,  behind the scenes stories of how they came up with for example a name, how their business model works,  their values about recruitment, etc. To get who they are as a human/expert and CEO. Which are your top 3 humans/CEOs/OWNERS from an industry that has nothing to do with yours whose vibes, world views, experiences, knowledge you's love to savour to the fullest for 1 day? Lenja. p.s.
