#Commitment to our #warfighters was recently highlighted through a Department of Defense (DoD) Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering (OUSD(R&E)) FutureG Office's contract extension for Hughes.   @Hughes' deployment of #Standalone #5G networks at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam (JBPHH) in Hawaii and at the Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI) in Washington State, has been proven as a strategic capability with both contracts extended through 2025 with additional 5G enhancements. The Defense Department has a new plan to deploy its own 5G wireless systems on military bases and other operating locations around the world, hoping to fill in the gaps not served by commercial telecom companies in, for example, remote and austere locations. The new private 5G deployment strategy — signed by acting DoD CIO Leslie Beavers on Oct. 16 and made public this month — calls for “accelerated” deployments of DoD-only 5G networks, but with a tailored approach that takes each location’s needs into consideration. The United States Department of Defense's FutureG office is implementing and testing 5G capabilities for military operations. The FutureG office, transferred to the DOD Chief Information Office in 2023, is working to expand research and testing of 5G and future-generation wireless network technologies. They are conducting live experiments to understand the real-world limitations and challenges of these radio systems. The office has multiple projects underway, including improving surveillance at bases in Africa by upgrading towers with 5G capabilities, and a multinational 5G experiment with NATO partners in Latvia to test the technology for military applications. Integrating 5G into military operations can provide benefits like higher data rates, resolution, and frame rates for surveillance, as well as enable interoperability for initiatives like Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2).
