Embracing the Hard Stuff: Lessons from Alix Mulholland CEO of FieldDay Ireland Last week, I had the pleasure of attending a female networking event hosted by A&L Goodbody LLP, with the incredible Alix Mulholland CEO of Field Day Candles, at my all time fav hotel room2 hometels | B Corp™ I’m personally a huge fan of their Folks Collection—it beautifully captures the essence of gathering and celebrates the heritage of our land. 🌿✨ But what resonated even more was Alix’s refreshing honesty about the real challenges behind the scenes: 🕯️ Candles that didn’t sell. 💼 Packaging ideas that missed the mark. 🤔 Hiring the wrong people, not trusting gut instincts... We often shy away from discussing the hard stuff, but Alix leaned right into it. It’s clear that challenge is not the enemy—it’s the forge where resilience, creativity, and business instincts are sharpened. Smooth rides don’t teach us much. The tough moments? That’s where growth happens. 𝗜𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗰𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀? In a world driven by scale and efficiency, "corporate" and "family" can seem worlds apart. Yet, I often wonder: can corporations operate with the closeness, care, and entrepreneurial mindset of a family business? Family businesses thrive on strong culture, deep values, and lasting connections. They prioritize long-term impact over short-term gains. Can a large corporate, with its global reach and complex structure, mirror this? I believe it can—with intention. Most corporations actually stem from very successful family businesses. In a way, embracing this mindset is a return to our roots—a way to remember that sustainable success comes from ensuring everyone has a strong connection to the business. By fostering this connection, we build a foundation for drive, accountability, and excellence. When people feel valued and united, commitment grows, innovation flourishes, and the workplace becomes a space where everyone thrives. This year, we launched the concept of Family Days at our BASF Coatings site in #Würzburg. These events, held on Saturdays, allow employees to bring their loved ones to the site to experience our development and production processes firsthand. Employees show where they work, explaining how their roles contribute to our products and customer service. The pride and joy on the faces of employees and their families have been nearly overwhelming. In 2024 alone, we’ve hosted over 300 visitors. For myself and other leaders, the extra care, preparation, and vigilance needed to ensure the safety of our guests is significant, but I have rarely felt more rewarded. Closing out the week grateful for these amazing humans… This was taken after my gig this week with two heavyweight technology companies: Red Hat and Ingram Micro. They were in town sharing a phenomenal opportunity for business growth with their Top Partners in Melbourne. As an ex-Technologist turned Professional Speaker my background (and foreground 😝) came in handy to add an extra layer to the conversation to help Partners really understand the opportunity at hand. The whole thing was definitely a team effort and it started well before the event itself with me deep diving into their world so I could configure my presentation to impact and influence the room. Thank you to this incredible bunch of humans for being so kind to me and helping me achieve the outcomes I was instructed to achieve. Already 1 year... only 1 year! 🚄 Between these 2 photos, 4 seasons, 10,494km travelled by train and 3,740km by car, multiple sticky notes and workshops (I didn't count), the meeting of very carefull colleagues and a few gastronomic surprises. But above all, an 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗷𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, which isn't over yet. 🌍 After almost 20 years of working from France, for France, with French people, I'm now working from France (mostly), for the whole world, with colleagues from Germany and every other continent. I experience the subject of diversity in a very different way, which implies a lot of effort on everyone's part to make sure we understand each other properly. I'm so grateful to all those who value 𝗺𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁 in our exchanges. 💡 I thought I was leaving the communication business, and I did ! But no transformation is possible without good communication. Everyday, I realize how valuable and useful my past experience is, and that I'm far from starting from scratch. 🚀 What's undoubtedly most new is to 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳-𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗺 and measure all the benefits in terms of efficiency, well-being, autonomy and engagement... This brings me even more confidence to accompany others on this "new ways of working" journey. It's more powerful than any book I could read on the subject, and it's really possible thanks to one of the best leaders I've met so far - 🙏 Friederike Braun-Lüdicke. ☝ 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲: the improvement in my productivity while integrating the #GettingThingsDone methodology into my daily life (not just at work), after being taught by the very best Dr. Julia Gumula. Thanks to reducing my tendency to procrastination, I manage to combine my life as an employee at B. Braun Groupe, as an entrepreneur with ARCHEN, as an administrator in No plastic in my sea + RComSanté - Réseau Communication Santé, a volunteer in Les Shifters ...while maintaining a family and social life - without going crazy and sleeping almost 7 hours a night. You should really give it a try. 👀 I'm very much looking forward to what will come during the next 12 months, and beyond!

March Madness Recap! The past three weeks have been nothing short of chaotic - more like CHAOS, in the best possible way! One of the primary reasons? Conferences. We hosted five consecutive three-day conferences, and what an incredible journey it was! Welcoming over 230 guests from 35+ countries and featuring 100+ speakers, each event was a whirlwind of inspiration and connection. As both an organizer and emcee, I had the privilege of witnessing participants expand their minds, share their stories, and forge beautiful connections. Among the highlights were our roundtable discussions, where we delved deep into various topics, fostering vulnerability, authenticity, and humility. On the final day of the fifth conference, Venerable Kundala, a Monk from Burma and one of our cherished regular attendees, shared poignant reflections on his experience: "The roundtables should serve as an example of what we should bring back into our homes and daily lives. Let's put down the technology and engage in meaningful conversations about our days, our struggles, and our joys. Let's reconnect with one another, offer support, truly see each other, and hold space for one another." I was reminded of the times when my kids were still at home, and we made it a rule not to have technology at the dinner table.
