The global community unites on World AIDS Day to reflect on progress in combating HIV/AIDS and the ongoing work needed. This year's theme, "Ending Inequality, Accelerating Progress," urges individuals, organisations, and governments to tackle systemic barriers hindering the fight against the epidemic. 🔑Key Facts to Remember: - Currently, over 38 million people worldwide live with HIV. - Despite significant treatment advancements, 1.3 million new infections in 2023 indicate the need for continued efforts. - Addressing stigma and discrimination is crucial alongside scientific advancements to ensure universal access to care and dignity. 📌What Can We Do? - Advocate for equal healthcare access and antiretroviral therapy, especially in marginalised communities. - Educate to dispel misinformation and combat stigma. - Support organisations dedicated to ending the epidemic through donations, volunteering, or spreading awareness. Let's pay tribute to those lost, acknowledge the strength of individuals living with HIV, and reaffirm our commitment to a future free of HIV/AIDS. 💪 #WorldAidsDay #gestaldt #morethangivingadvice

The AIDS conference #AIDS2024 has reinforced our commitment to end HIV/AIDS by 2030. With the right investment, innovations, and actions to remove human rights related barriers, this goal can be achieved. Of course, we are delighted that Chancellor Scholz emphasized The Global Fund as an important player in his opening speech and renewed his promise of future support. This is a strong signal from our fourth largest donor country. The new scientific breakthroughs that have been announced at the conference are very exciting. However, the best innovations are only useful if they reach those who need them most. To achieve this, it is crucial that the innovations are procured in sufficient quantities at a fair price. This is where the Global Fund leverages its market shaping capabilities to reduce prices by placing large orders. For example, the recently approved dapivirine vaginal ring, which enables women to protect themselves against HIV, could quickly be purchased in large quantities. Sophia Schoeneberg Chris Obermeyer

Recently, the Friends of the David Powell Clinic (FODPC) modernized our bylaws. FODPC serves as a "safety net" for people living with HIV ( #PLWH ) served by the Austin area public health system. Our bylaws were originally drafted in the 1990's, when response to the AIDS epidemic demanded a very different nonprofit. They were largely designed for a "reactive" approach, largely to rapidly meet needs of people in crisis. With changes in HIV care and funding making HIV a manageable condition, our board knew it was our responsibility to update our focus. Over the course of a year, I had the opportunity to facilitate this process, including a half-day board retreat (with a lot of Stickie Notes!), multiple conversations with provider teams, and meetings with other organizations in the space. Some of the big changes aligning us today's needs included... - Focusing our purpose around "wellbeing" informed by #SDOH principles as a way to build equity and health. - Updating our service population to include a focus on historically marginalized communities and populations at high risk of contracting HIV. - Making it easier to meet virtually so we can have a more inclusive board. In retrospect, there are a few things I would do differently in this process. To that end, I'm posting a few questions on my LinkedIn the next couple of weeks, and would love to learn more from my connections (and maybe have some good discussion!). Question # 1 is... What is one of your favorite methods to #facilitate coming to decisions when decision-makers are using differing communication styles?

A staggering 210,000 adolescent girls and young women (aged 15-24) in sub-Saharan Africa contracted HIV in 2022 alone, according to the UN. This critical issue demands ongoing action. That's why we're proud to partner with the Kaana Foundation For Outreach Programs. This non-profit empowers young people, women, and children affected by HIV and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) challenges.
