The recent Burger King Halloween/Joker/Blackface controversy is a clear reminder: without diversity on teams, cultural awareness falls through the cracks. I came across a comment saying "People of color are tired of calling this stuff out; it's not our job," and while I get the frustration, I have to disagree. I can’t expect my coworkers to be fully aware of my culture, just like I won’t know everything about theirs. It’s on all of us to speak up and educate each other when something’s off. That’s how we grow and actually move forward together. If we can’t connect on this level, are we really working as a team, or just getting things done in isolation?

Chipotle wants you to know that they've seen the viral TikTok’s “bowl hack” — and they have the perfect response to it. Recent complaints about Chipotle’s serving sizes have customers revealing that filming in line put pressure on the chain to appear “fair” with their scoop, ensuring larger helpings. Happy Meal…or Happy Friday. Either works for me growing up. ➡ Situation As a child, I looked forward to Fridays because it was a time when my parents would either get takeout or take us out; and many Fridays for me meant McDonald’s. Friday was payday, and although there wasn’t much extra money, there was always enough for a meal with my siblings at McDonald’s. Arriving at that place under the majestic golden arches as a child was a day of wonder. Wrestling open that Happy Meal package to find a toy and one of the lovable McDonald’s characters like Ronald McDonald, Hamburglar, and Grimace was always exciting. I was a Grimace fan. I don’t know why. Maybe it was something about a walking, talking, yet purple blob that I found interesting. Oh yes, he was known as a monster, but you wouldn’t know it by his all-embracing kindness, consistent humor, and perpetual cheerfulness. ➡ Reflection Why Grimace? I think what drew me to Grimace was his all-welcoming embrace. Reflecting on it, you can’t judge the kindness of someone by their looks, even if they look like a monster. ➡ Wisdom Remember the characters you grew up with and ask yourself why they were important to you. Chances are, there was a character worth emulating in your own life who inspired you to live it fully. ➡ Share Your Thoughts 1. What about Friday did you look forward to? 2. 🌮THERE IS NO NORMAL! A quick story about taco shells... My teenage daughter likes hard shell tacos. Being a teenager, she makes requests based on her instincts in the moment. Sometimes the taco shells I buy from the store aren't the name brand or the specific kind she likes or is used to. On the rare occasion this happens, she invariably asks the same question with typical teenage disgust... "Dad, can you get the 'normal' shells next time!?" To which I patiently respond that 'there are no 'normal' taco shells. There are just taco shells'. This philosophy also applies to people and their brains. • I've never liked the word 'normal'. • I didn't like it when I taught autistic kids; before I knew I was autistic. • I didn't like it after my diagnosis. • I certainly don't like it now. The problem with 'normal' is that it's subjectively based on a person's or a group of people's ideas, beliefs, experiences, and comfort. Anything left or right of this is deemed odd, weird, unorthodox, or divergent. This is usually based on individualistic fear, lack of knowledge, or inexperience versus a collective conversation and a desire to connect with the other person or group of people. This leads to an us vs. them, black vs. white, right vs. wrong lifestyle and mindset. In other words, 'Compliance vs. Community'. This is why, as a society, we have to move "From Compliance to Community"™. Move from patterns of fixed thoughts and beliefs to a series of incremental changes in behavior. THERE IS NO NORMAL!
