Creating a strong team spirit is no easy task. Some say it’s all about recognition, others highlight diversity, and the opportunity to engage in friendly competition—like the NSW Corporate Games—also works wonders in bringing teams together. At these Games, Transdev Light Rail teams in Sydney proudly displayed our team spirit—and let me tell you, we showed up strong across the board! We performed well in every event and even took home the Medallist Award for winning the most medals overall. Why? Because: -We showed up—and on time, naturally! (Punctuality is in our DNA) -We backed each other—team spirit isn’t just about winning; it’s about supporting one another, no matter the outcome. True team spirit grows when you feel supported, and yes, it comes from the occasional loss too. (Preaching? Maybe. But it’s the truth!) -Whether we won, lost, or laughed our way through the competition, everyone involved spoke of how much fun they had and how good it felt to be part of the team. In summary, we’ve got game—and plenty of it, as our results below prove: Golf: Gold and Silver - Women’s Single Basketball: Bronze – Men’s, and Sport Award Games Quiz: Silver and Bronze, and Sport Award Bowling: Silver and Bronze Badminton: Bronze - Women’s Single Table Tennis: Silver – Mixed Doubles Netball: Gold – Mixed, and Sport Award A big shoutout to all our participants who turned up, looked great, and played well. Project 35 - History Made! Sir Mark Cavendish achieves a record 35th stage win at the Tour de France, cycling’s biggest stage. We marvel at this feat and share in its excitement. My reflections after witnessing this piece of sporting history. Team Team Team 🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️ The achievement is personal, but the result is born out of teamwork. “Cav” achieved this record with Team Astana yesterday, his fourth team in the Tour over fifteen seasons. Every member played their part - domestique, lead outs who carved the way through the peloton of 174 riders and placed him in a favourable position. The final sprint took place one kilometre from the finish but all the work started 176 km prior. While his typical force, experience and domination ensured the outcome, it was teamwork no doubt. Everyone knew their place, got on with the plan, managed situations and delivered on details. Belief and Followership His last stage win came in 2021, a comeback year. In 2022, he was left out of the tour, and in 2023 he suffered a race ending crash. Delaying his retirement by one year, to make a tilt at beating his joint record with the legendary Eddie Merckx. He could have have left it at 34, with injuries and naysayers. Much credit I feel goes to his former lead out and now coaching staff, Mark Renshaw. It is a belief in destiny, to have followers who believe in your goal to be onboard. That takes influence and referent leadership. Consistency is not straight 📈 He started the first stage of this year’s Tour, seemingly unable to cope. The odds didn’t look good, with a strong field, including other sprinters worthy of beating him on any day. On optics, the wins speak of consistency. The reality is far from it. Being consistent involves overcoming dips in form, distractions. The successes belies the pain, sweat and tears. It’s what to do when the form books are not aligned - grit and adaptability. Who are the other winners? The enthusiasts and learners. This informs us to believe, trust the power of teamwork and seize the day. When we see the Mark Cavendishs of industries, we need to look to the ecosystem - to fully appreciate the context of their successes. #team #believe #teamwork #consistency #leadership #followership #tourdefrance #cycling #teamplay

“It’s important to understand the ‘aggregation of marginal gains’.  Put simply…. how small improvements in a number of different aspects of what we do can have a huge impact to the overall performance of the team.” When Sir Dave Brailsford became head of British Cycling in 2002, the team had almost no history of success. In 76 years, they had only won a single gold medal.  Sir Dave, a former professional cyclist, applied the theory of marginal gains to cycling – ultimately breaking down every element of the competition and improving each by 1% to increase overall performance significantly.  The result? Between the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics the team won 16 gold medals.   Sir Dave challenged the traditional mindset of British cycling to achieve unprecedented success.  At Elixirr we believe the principle of marginal gains goes beyond sports. I came last in my age group in a 10km race, and I couldn't have been happier! At the 2017 World Masters Games in Auckland, I met a couple of Australian runners in the pre-start area, helping them out when they couldn't quite snap the selfie they were after. They were good friends - one was a personal trainer, and the other was running her first ever 10k, trained by her friend. Our newbie runner was nervous, because her top training distance was a 7.5km run-walk. The crowd of runners stretched out quickly once the race started. We moseyed along, chatting, laughing, and admiring the waterfront course. And we were SLOOOOOOOW! 🐢 In fact, we were some of the last on the course. When we crossed the finish line (to applause from the half-marathoners lined up to start their event), our newbie runner looked at her watch, then shouted 'I can't believe it! I did it! I didn't walk at all! And I was 10 minutes faster than my goal!'. Cue tears and laughter and hugs all round. Even before race day, I knew I wouldn't be on the podium, but I hadn't expected to be last in my age group. And yet, I was delighted - not only had I had some fun company on the course, but I had been lucky enough to witness to someone breaking through their own barriers. And I was also damn proud of my last place effort. Because someone has to be last - but that person is always ahead of those who never even tried. So, if you - or someone you know - ends up in last place, celebrate that as evidence of having had the gumption to give something a go. Getting dropped and still winning ? 🤔 This was the moment about 60k into my long ride with the club this morning when I finally got dropped. In the words of Tadej Pogacar ‘I’m done’ In road cycling getting dropped can often feel like failure: ❌Loosing - Didn’t finish with the group. ❌Quitting - Didn’t complete the ride. I cut the ride 10k short. ❌Try Harder - Could I have pushed myself even more? But on my 30k cruise home, it left me pondering the postives: ✅Pushing my limits - Cycling with 3 of the fastest guys in the club for 60km at 38k/h average. Something I thought not possible until recently. To ride fast, I have realised I have to ride with fast guys and accept that sometimes getting dropped is part of my development. ✅Turning Up - I’d had a bad couple of nights sleep and I nearly rolled over and didn’t get up. But made myself accountable, pushed myself to turn up and not let my team down. ✅ Being realistic - When I turned up and saw 3 beasts of the club, I reevaluated my goals and thought maybe getting round the first loop (30k) would be a success. ✅ Getting Back On - I got dropped about 5 times and got back on. Sometimes albeit because the guys were kind enough to knock off throttle a bit, but I still had to push hard to stay in contact. ✅ Shifting Priorities - After finally getting dropped I rode on a little and then thought best to cut the ride short, so that I could get home in time for breakfast with my daughters, which made them happy and then get to work feeling fresh, fuelled and ready to go. ✅ Team building - When you ride with guys that push you to your limits but are also supportive in seeing your improvements, it can really create a strong team bond. Challenging but respectful. Leaving the team to grow in time. As the adage goes “one man’s success is another man’s failure’. Success is relative and personal. Sometimes its just in your head. 😎 Inspiration and passion 🚵♂️ MVDP has won a second "Roubaix", with a sharp attack leaving the whole peloton stuck on the cobbles (and after a huge work from his teammates, especially Gianni) One week before, the Ronde van Vlanderen 🇧🇪 was for him as well. Earlier in the month, he was helping his buddy Japser winning La Primavera Milan-San Remo, by a decisive aspiration given to him. Everything done wearing his 🌈 jersey gained in Glasgow after an epic race. And before the other 🌈 jersey in Tabor for cyclo-cross, after a season in the mud of the Belgian tracks, the snow of Val di Sole. MVDP is amazing and amazingly inspiring, he : ➡ Shows how a leader embarks a whole team into a long-lasting project : more than 10 years in a row ! ➡ Legitimacy comes from the field and mutual respect : be fair, smart and honest ➡ Leads by example : attacks sharply when needed, helps, brings bidons to the teammates, gets awards and rewards his teammates ➡This sport is individual, but you are nothing without your teammates : winning is a team-affair ➡ Remains a human-being and could not fight for the victory in his homeland for the Amstel Gold Race : failure is not a problem... ➡ Makes his passion his daily routine, his job, his pleasure, his life : live your passion ➡ Confirms that loyalty, trust, recognition and empathy are the best soft skills ever for a great leader : have them part of your behavior and grow them As an amateur rider as I am, MVDP is a great source of inspiration. I will never ever get the tenth of his power and strength on a bike, but he makes me climb more and more and push harder on the pedals at each occasion. Business wise, the bullet points over here are acumens to have by ourselves... “We work with the best people and the best technology.” What can every leader learn from this historic move in cycling? Wout Van Aert, one of cycling’s great riders, signed on for the rest of his career with Richard Plugge and Team Visma l Lease a Bike. There are a few important factors to note here: 1. This contract comes at the end of a not-so-great season for Wout Van Aert. He had a few terrible crashes- and did not finish either the Tour de France or the Vuelta Espana- the two biggest races. The team leadership invested in his history and his potential. 2. Team Visma lost its position on top of the podiums for both the Tour de France and the Vuelta Espana- podiums they dominated in 2023. Wout Van Aert invested in the history of the team and the team’s potential. 3. Most important in this article, Wout says- “we work with the best people and the best technology…we focus on continuous improvement which means we grow both as individuals and as a team.” For anyone who wonders what culture really is- look at this article. It is not investing in people over systems, nor the other way around. It is bringing the investment into balance, and always growing and developing for better outcomes.
