🚀 Interesting fact that blew my mind and still inspires me to this day. 🚀 💡 💡 Did you know if you could get 1% better each day for one year(yes only 1%), you'll end up 37 x times better by the time you are done. 🤯 David Brailsford, British Cycling Coach changed the fate of British Cycling by using a strategy 'aggregation of marginal gains' a philosophy of making tiny marginal improvements in everything you do. Using this strategy he catapulted the British Cycling team from mediocrity to a winning 60% gold medals at the 2008 Olympics. 🥇 🥇 🥇 In 2004, Great Britain won two cycling gold medals after a long history of minimal success. Through marginal gains, Brailsford led the team to win 60% of the gold medals at the 2008 Olympics and set numerous records in 2012. This approach also saw Bradley Wiggins become the first British cyclist to win the Tour de France in 2012, followed by multiple wins from his teammate Chris Froome. David laid the foundation of 2 decades of success for British Cycling with his philosophy of tiny improvements for significant results. ⭐ You don't need to make big changes to get remarkable results. On Saturday, I placed first OVERALL (female) in the Harvest Moon bike run in Boulder, CO. (This was meant to be a half Ironman distance 70.3 mi triathlon, but the swim was cancelled due to blue green algae). This was my first OVERALL podium, let alone win. The professional lessons from this event lie in strategic execution- making smart decisions driven by a clear mission/vision and saying no to things that would have detracted from my goals, so that I could ultimately surpass them. I opted not to do the extra 5k run when the swim was cancelled, because I had not trained for it or thought through a strategy for that race. I’d only be risking injury and jeopardizing my once in a lifetime opportunity to represent the USA at the World Championships. I wanted to do right by my generous donors. This decision allowed me to have my best bikes and runs ever on the brutal Boulder course, despite the hot 🥵 weather. I had to push significantly harder than I ever had before on the 56 mi bike ride, while also conserving energy to then run 13.1 miles. I consciously decided NOT to chase down one woman who passed me, and who I believe won the overall bike only race with a bike time within seconds of my own. I had to recognize that my own unique competitive advantage lies in very strong cycling and better than average running. I had to focus on myself, with limited information. In triathlon wave starts with multiple races (bike only, duathlon, bike run, etc.) you neither start with nor race within sight of your direct competitors. I had to strategize and execute brilliantly. Please consider helping me get to the half Ironman world championships. A great deep dive into what's going on with Triathlon Participation by Tim Heming and Alfredo Molinas for Triathlete Magazine. (Link below) In the past 10 years there have been some HUGE shifts and changes in what's been going on in the sport of Triathlon. Overall participation seemed to peak between 2012 and 2014. Also the hype and numbers around the full IRONMAN race seemed to peak at around that same time. Then a big slide. The Pandemic and the shutdowns, cancelations and postponements - really seemed to accelerate all of this when we came out of the backside of that. Now it's literally a whole new world . . and business in the sport of triathlon! I am old enough to know of the phenomenon Tim and Alfredo speak of in the opening of the article. Back in the 1980's and early 1990's, you were not considered a triathlete unless you had done a full Ironman race, and you had not truly done a Ironman unless you had raced the legendary original one, in Kona, HI (Not to brag, but I was fortunate enough to race the iconic Kona IM in 1989!). Things have shifted radically since those days, and even just in the last 5 - 10 years. Planning with athletes for 2025 season has begun! ▪️ “Let's do this! Bolton 70.3 & UK Ultimate Full Distance three weeks later!" ▪️ “Project Lanza 2025 is officially a go!!" ▪️ “All in for next year then chief? Ironman Wales one last time!" ▪️ “I'm thinking London Marathon, then Ironman Bolton 70.3. And maybe Outlaw Half. That would work wouldn't it?" ▪️ “I really want to have a go at a 70.3 next year, so once I've done the marathon in November can we switch the focus?" ▪️ “I'm looking at potential races for next year. I have narrowed it down to Spain! After the middle distance race next month ... work shall begin!" ▪️ “I really want to think about the whole season really. Signing up for my first Brisbane Half Marathon I was excited, to run a new course and location, having only ever done one run in Brisbane since moving up to Queensland. Signing up after the MooTri, I set my sights on running a sub 1:20 half marathon. I felt confident that I would be able to achieve this goal, having really started to see big gains in my fitness, powder and endurance over the last 18 months. The training went as well as could be, I started out having planned to run 4.5 hours per week and in the weeks early on in March, this was happening. March 18-24 - 4h 24m - 57km March 25-31 - 4h 36m - 58km But then as always, life has a habit of changing plans. With holidays, Easter x2, increased work and family commitments I had to adjust my training plan to 3hrs running per week. As I always tell clients, it is consistency that matters both with nutrition and quality training sessions that build momentum and results. April 1-7 - 1h 10min - 15km April 8-14 - 3h 19min - 35km April 15-21 - 3h 31min - 42km April 22-28 - Zero running April 29-May 5 - 3h - 14min 43km May 6-12 3h - 2min - 40km May 13-19 2h - 30min - 34km May 20-26 3h - 16min - 43km No build for a race goes to plan especially when you have young kids in childcare and school. And this build was no different. But over the years I’ve come to expect this as a plan for these interruptions (or extra rest days). But as the weeks and days got closer to race day, my key race pace sessions I was executing well and this gave me confidence that I would have a good race. Now a few weeks out from the race many people I spoke to who had previously run the course were telling me that the course was quite undulated and there were some punchy hills, so with this information I made a slight adjustment to my race plan. I decided to race to power, and I was glad I did. Race week went off without a glitch and waking up race morning I felt fresh, energised, lean and fast. I woke up at 3:30am for my usual race day brekky and a double espresso. In light of this year's Ironman 70.3 World Championship in New Zealand, I recently had the opportunity to talk about how the sport of triathlon has made an impact on my personal and professional life. It's too long to post the whole thing here, but here's a short snippet (there's a link to read more at the end): Several years after graduating college, I discovered the sport of triathlon and with it, many physical and mental benefits. At first glance, triathlon may seem like an individual sport, but like much of what we do in life, it’s been a team effort and an amazing adventure. Oddly enough, I found my passion for triathlon because of the Natural Gas industry. About ten years ago, my supervisor in Athens, Ohio introduced me to dirt biking and cycling. He convinced me to purchase a race bike and I instantly fell in love. With his encouragement, I signed up for my first triathlon. The spirit of competition, the chance to see how far I could push myself, the ability to develop new skills, and the people I met and community I built along the way drove me to succeed. I had the help of several coaches who pushed me beyond what I thought was possible. In the space of a year, I went from competing in the sprint triathlon distance (16 miles) to the half Ironman distance (70.3 miles) to a full Ironman (140.6 miles). Maintaining a balance between working full time and training is not always easy, but I have learned valuable time management skills that have allowed me to continue to set lofty goals for myself. As an athlete competing among the best in the world, my goal is to finish in the top 25% in 2024. As I continue to set the bar higher for myself and push my limits, I have gained a sense of accomplishment and confidence that has translated to virtually every aspect of my life, both personally and professionally. “You are a triathlete. You can do this.” Felt super sluggish going into the gym today. Almost turned the car around to go home. Shoulder felt goofy too, which made wanting to go home feel legit. But the rest of the week isn’t gonna be any less busy and I’m here already, so let’s just get in the pool and see how it goes. Warm up gets done and I’m off doing my main sets. It will be the furthest I swam in a long time. I’ve never been a fast, or great swimmer. Like anything else, you become better by doing the thing often. And truth be told, I don’t spend enough time swimming. So here we are relearning and trying to perfect the stroke - reach and pull; rotate the body; stay relaxed and efficient. Luckily, I’m strong enough to keep going, bad form or not. “You are a triathlete. You can do this” And while getting these meters in, I was thinking about how often we become what we think of ourselves. Oftentimes, what we think of ourselves is placed upon us from others who might have tried and failed and placed that limit onto us. Or those that were fearful to step into the unknown and placed that fear onto us. Or those that are simply just haters and want to be crabs and pull everyone down. This past weekend at Kelp Kabobs, I saw dozens of people tackling their first triathlon - road runners, trail runners, ultra marathoners, cyclist, OCR heads, gym rats. All getting outside of their comfort zone and doing something new and scary. But the positivity from others convinced them they could do the scary thing. Just like tackling their first marathon or ultra. It’s scary until you do the thing, then it becomes less scary. “You are a triathlete. You can do this” I finally get over the mental hump and have one last set to do. I’m tired but I committed myself to do the triathlon things. Now it’s time to dig deep and get it done and get on with the rest of my day. “You are a triathlete.
