The Barbie Dream Gap Project is a global initiative launched by Mattel in 2018 to address the barriers that prevent girls from reaching their full potential. Research has shown that starting at age five, girls begin to doubt their abilities more than boys, influenced by stereotypes and societal biases. The project aims to close this gap by challenging gender stereotypes and providing girls with the resources and support they need to continue believing in themselves. Key elements of the project includes: UCLA’s Center for Scholars & Storytellers developed a curriculum that supports social-emotional development and encourages interest in STEM careers among young girls. Collaborations with organizations like Inspiring Girls International to deliver Dream Gap workshops and reach thousands of girls worldwide. Since 2019, Barbie has donated $250,000 annually to non-profits working directly with girls. The Barbie Dream Gap Project is empowering girls globally by challenging stereotypes and supporting their limitless potential and inspiring the next generation of female leaders through education, partnerships, and annual donations. The American Softball League is a Special Needs Program for Autism and Developmental Disabilities. The players get together once a week to a fun, non-competitive social environment. "The world can be a better place" A little bit about their program: While some people may think their challenges might inhibit them from playing a sport they dreamed of, we prove to them that they can do it and make their dream of playing softball a reality. Every single player gets a chance to hit the ball, run around the bases, and play the field. Before every game, “The Pledge of Allegiance” is recited and then the team sings “The Star Spangled Banner” which inspires the players. The American Softball Organization is dedicated to helping people reach their full potential; mentally, socially and physically. Busy day today - after speaking at Nursing Live! I joined the Association of Volunteer Managers annual conference to lead a workshop on making a persuasive business case to fund volunteer services. Interesting to hear from participants that one of the biggest barriers was senior leadership buy in to volunteering. It was good to share Helpforce insights into how making a shift from focussing on activity to impact on organisational goals can start to get this buy in. #AVM2024

To retain talent, you must focus on creating incentives that match your employees' needs. Don't give them a car if they can walk to work. Understand what they need. When I was 18, I volunteered to build an after-school circus academy in Ukraine where I had 60 children running, screaming, and throwing their juggling balls as missiles. To keep them engaged, I let the most hardworking children take equipment to the schoolyard and show off their skills. I also announced our first public performance which increased attendance to an all-time high. Today, those students run their art program and carry on our group's non-profit culture festival. This taught me that true leadership means creating a common ground, where everybody can contribute their skills and feel that their perspectives are understood.
