Stop glamorizing frequent relocations for work. It is one of a heavy toll on mental and emotional wellbeing of an employee. It is one of the reasons for disengagement and muted productivity. At a young age it may seem good to be always moving but as you grow you come to know about the hidden costs of it. These relocations are making it very tough for today`s employees. - When you come to know about local surroundings, people and culture it's time to pack up again. So, you never feel belonged. - You move away from your people whose presence play an important role in your well being. - You have to leave your parents behind as it is difficult for them to keep on moving at the age. - Your partner either has to sacrifice /his/her career or you have to stay at separate location. - Your kids have to change their schools frequently which disturbs their studies. - You missed out on important time of togetherness with your family. Sure, there are some benefits of knowing different cultures and professional environments, but the problems and tolls weighs much more than the benefits. Relocation should be the choice of the employee and should not be forced upon them. People need to stay at places where they feel as the part of culture and demography. This is a LOCAL job, for LOCAL people, We'll have no relocators here... Why the resistance from some hiring managers and HR practitioners about people relocating? I know not everyone is in a situation to move easily, if at all, but many are. Trends we are seeing making people more mobile include: 🏠 Average age of first time buyers going up ⬆ 💒 Average age of marriage going up ⬆ 👶 Average age of becoming parents going up ⬆ As a result, more people are able to consider a move without those big commitments to contend with. And that is before we consider those who are actually MOTIVATED to relocate for a whole host of reasons: 💸 Cheaper cost of living 💰 More affordable housing 👨👩👧👦 To be closer to family or friends 🌆 To experience a new culture 🏫 Or as I know first-hand from academia, to move to where a specialist job is located So PLEASE do not discount candidates (of whom I have already qualified their situation during indepth conversations prior to presenting them to you) just because they do not already live locally. Especially when the local talent pool has already been exhausted, and/or you are requiring specialist skills or experiences, and/or have a limited budget. #hr #recruitment #relocating #localjobs
