**Heinz: Flipping Expectations with the Thickest Ketchup!** So, here I was, scrolling down the instagra , and I see this billboard ad that literally stopped me. Heinz took their iconic ketchup bottle, flipped it upside down, and splashed it across billboards. I couldn’t help but smile. Why? Because it’s pure genius! It’s one of those "Why didn't I think of that?" moments. Heinz ketchup is so thick, you have to flip the bottle over and shake it to get it out. By flipping the bottle on the billboard, they didn’t just tell us their ketchup is thick—they showed us. It’s brave, it’s smart, and it’s such a simple idea that it sticks with you (pun intended). As a social media marketer, I’m always on the lookout for campaigns that break the mold and make you think. This one hits the mark perfectly. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best ideas are the simplest ones. Ah, the latest John Lewis Christmas ad is upon us… And what an absolute masterclass of marketing this has become. If you had told me when I first started out in this business that a brand could create a pent-up demand for one of its ads, every single year, I would have laughed. And loudly. The very idea that John Lewis has created a ‘marketing moment’ for brand awareness is pure genius. And now every retailer covets that same hallowed ground, with limited success. So, is this year's ad any good? Well, we can only ever rate these things subjectively for now. The real measure will come in John Lewis’s seasonal sales results. But there was one thing that caught my attention. In the ad, we see someone struggling to choose a gift for a loved one. Something many of us will undoubtedly encounter. John Lewis’s answer is simply to demonstrate the breadth of their stock. But what if they’d given me a better solution to the problem they so expertly framed? What if John Lewis had launched a new service - ‘PerfectoGift.’ What if they offered an AI-powered predictor that allowed me to input data on a loved one - even scraped their social media feeds - and recommended the perfect present? Wouldn’t that be incredible? Rather than the hopeless ‘Gifts for Him’ and ‘Gifts for Her’. These predictors do exist, the data science and technology that AI is able to facilitate these days is mindblowing. So why don’t we use that power to solve those stressful gift choice challenges? Or does it suit the retailer to have us dash around in a mad panic and overspend each year?
