Today on World Food Day, Plants First Healthcare is calling for hospitals to take action for human and planetary health by adopting a ‘plant-based by default’ approach. The initiative - led by senior NHS doctors - is supported by 24 healthcare organisations representing more than one million members. The idea behind the initiative is simple: offer and incentivise plant-based meals as the primary menu option without restricting choice. An open letter to support the initiative, addressed to every NHS Trust and healthcare leader, has already gained over 1200 signatures from a range of healthcare professionals. It has been signed by the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change, the British Dietetic Association (BDA) Sustainable Diets Group, the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare, and Nuffield Health among many others. The initiative launches alongside the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change (UKHACC) Food Systems Policy Report, which calls for the normalisation of plant-based meals within all healthcare settings. Sign up for the launch day webinar to learn how you can take action: https://lnkd.in/e2zh_Xgc Visit plantsfirsthealthcare.com and send the letter to your hospital’s CEO, sustainability lead, or lead dietitian! #PlantsFirstHealthcare #WorldFoodDay #HospitalFood

Following the footsteps of New York City, the UK wants to transform healthcare with plant-based meals. 🌱🍽️ Just as NYC hospitals have seen remarkable success with their "Plant-Based by Default" menus, 24 healthcare orgs with 1 million+ members are calling on NHS trusts and ICBs to adopt this approach. Benefits: - Improved health outcomes - Reduced health inequalities - Significant cost savings - Environmental sustainability Let's create a healthier and more sustainable future for patients and communities. #PlantBasedByDefault
👏Massive news!👏 24 healthcare orgs with 1 million+ members have called on all UK hospitals to serve plant-based meals as the default option, which would: 🍎 promote healthier eating 🍎cut NHS food-related emissions by up to 50%, 🍎save the NHS an est. $74 million per year🍎all whilst preserving choice (patients could still choose a meat-based option if they wanted). The letter is also signed by 1,000 healthcare professionals, including Professor Tim Spector, Dame Parveen Kumar and Dr Fiona Godlee, former editor of the British Medical Journal. New York City has successfully implemented plant-based default meals in all 11 New York public hospitals, and has served over 1.2 million plant-based meals since March 2022. This has lead to a 36% reduction in carbon emission, a cost saving of 59 cents per meal and a more than 90% satisfaction rate. So this is a tried and tested policy. Feedback are proud to be signatories of the letter alongside many other orgs. What an incredible step in the right direction: healthy, plant-based meals to nurture folks in hospitals, promote healthier eating, and as a co-benefit, a way to reduce CO2 emissions, too. Good for people, good for planet, and by the sounds of things, good for the NHS budget, too. #climateaction #foodchoices

As many of you know, I'm a strong advocate for making plant-based diets the norm, with high-environmental-impact foods (often animal products) available as an optional choice. This is something that I keep working as Strategy Advisor to Alianza Alimentaria. While hospitals and the healthcare sector face many sustainability challenges—from energy consumption and single-use medical devices to anaesthetic gases like nitrous oxide—the impact of food systems is often overlooked. That's why I’m thrilled to see initiatives that promote plant-based diets in hospitals. It’s a crucial step toward reducing the environmental footprint of healthcare. I hope this momentum continues and inspires broader sustainable changes across the sector. There’s so much more that hospitals can do to become more sustainable and circular. Here’s a great resource for those interested: https://lnkd.in/dRFx3-K8

It’s here and the sirens are howling. 2024 represents one of the worst harvests on record, with projections for 2025 no better, or worse. The time for prevention has well passed. This is the emergency. “It is clear that climate change is the biggest threat to UK food security. And these impacts are only going to get worse until we reduce our greenhouse gas emissions to net zero, in order to stop the warming that is driving these extremes.” * Whilst plant-based food is not a singular panacea to the emergency, there is science-based evidence to its positive impact on human and ecological health. On World Food Day - yeap, who knew - can you swap a pattie for a plant? — https://lnkd.in/e_BN7Tvj

Eating Better alliance partner, UK Health Alliance on Climate Change has published an evidence-based policy report: Plant-powered Planet: Building a healthy & sustainable food system. The report was produced in collaboration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), The UK Kidney Association, and Plant-Based Health Professionals UK. Andrew Stark, Eating Better's Senior Research and Policy Manager said: "Plant-powered Planet is an important contribution in connecting the dots between our health and the food we eat. It outlines how an increase in fruit and veg consumption and production can deliver multiple benefits for our health, our environment and our producers. Healthcare systems are a key part of our food environment and an important tool in making healthy and sustainable diets a reality across the UK, as set out in the public procurement action (https://lnkd.in/gVSRzdfr) in our Better by Half Roadmap."
