This week is Inclusion at Work Week, an initiative led by Diversity Council Australia Ltd. This week is an annual, week-long national celebration of diversity and inclusion in Australian workplaces. There is much evidence out there supporting how inclusion at work benefits employee health and wellbeing, innovation and performance. Workplaces have an important role to play in creating safe, equitable work environments that give everyone a chance to contribute and achieve their potential, irrespective of who they are.   Inclusion at work is what makes the Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Sector so special – a great appreciation of different perspectives and capabilities present. From multicultural and religious backgrounds, lived/living experiences, disabilities, carer perspectives – Diversity is a Value Add to any organisation. At QAMH we are celebrating #InclusionAtWorkWeek and encourage all Australian organisations to take action to create inclusive workplaces where everyone feels respected, connected, and able to contribute their best.

Season of Inclusion: How Employers Can Make a Difference this December The holiday season is a perfect time to embrace inclusion in the workplace. As we approach the end of the year, it’s important to reflect on how we can make our workplaces more inclusive and welcoming for individuals with disabilities or other barriers to employment. This week, from 18 to 22 November, I join workplaces across Australia in celebrating Inclusion at Work Week 2024. It’s a time to reflect on how we can create workplaces that empower and include everyone. Did You Know? • Inclusive organisations are up to 25% more profitable and nearly 10 times more likely to be innovative. (dca.org.au) • Employees in inclusive teams are 4x less likely to experience discrimination and harassment. My Challenge to You Having lived through an exclusionary ordeal that profoundly impacted my sense of self worth and mental health, I have learned how critical inclusion is—not just for success, but for the well-being of everyone involved. This week, I challenge you to: 1. 🌟 Reflect on Your Biases: Take time to uncover any unconscious biases that might be blocking your inclusionary practices. Ask yourself: How am I contributing to belonging? [Some resources provided in comments below👇🏻👇🏽👇🏾👇🏿] 2. 📚 Educate Yourself: Learn about the diverse experiences and backgrounds of your colleagues. Inclusion starts with understanding. 3. 🗣️ Engage in Conversations: Create space for open dialogue. Listen actively and without judgment to different perspectives. 4. ✅ Take Action: Commit to one practical change you can make this week to foster inclusion in your workplace. 💡 Together, we can create workplaces where everyone feels they belong and are valued. #InclusionAtWorkWeek

From my perspective, key social sustainability KPIs include community involvement, employee well-being, diversity and inclusion, and local economic impact. These indicators help gauge a company’s commitment to the community, its workforce, and the local economy. For example, tracking community engagement, such as partnerships and projects, reflects a genuine dedication to social responsibility. Employee well-being metrics, like job satisfaction and health and safety, show how the company values its people. Diversity and inclusion KPIs, focusing on representation and equality, indicate an active effort toward fairness. Finally, local economic impact metrics, such as local hiring rates and fair wages, demonstrate the company’s investment in community development, highlighting a broader commitment to building a sustainable society.
