Heading a Finance team of eleven across Working Capital, Management Accounting and Statutory Reporting, this role requires strong leadership to drive team performance, meet reporting objectives and foster professional growth of the team in line with the Group’s performance management framework. Role title ≠ Role responsibility I had a candidate ask me yesterday what the difference was between a Finance Manager and a Financial Controller. Whilst I ran through the main differences with her and gave examples, I ended my advice with the fact that it feels like some companies pick titles out of a hat. You can see a role advertised as a Finance Director, yet it’s essentially a glorified Finance Manager. It’s so important to understand what the role does, the responsibilities, the exposure, the report lines, the stakeholders, the team size, the structure of that team (what’s dealt with by someone else) etc etc. Don’t take a role on title alone. It’s not as simple as Finance Manager - Financial Controller - Finance Director - CFO. What is the number one indicator that someone will enjoy a successful career as a Finance Director or CFO? Their ability to manage risk. Technical capabilities plateau over time as teams grow and the heavy lifting of number crunching & data analysis is delegated. Ultimately, as you move into Finance Director or CFO roles, your role is to manage risk appropriately, showing high levels of commercial awareness, astuteness, and an ability to influence. At the Finance Director / CFO level, the impact of the decisions you make and don't make have equal implications. Deferring a decision to someone in a more senior position is no longer an option, as the role of CFO dictates that the responsibility for taking a decision rests with you. The transition from, say, a Financial Controller or Finance Manager to this Finance Director or CFO level can take time, but is ultimately worth the reward. I was a Finance Manager, I wanted to prove myself. The CFO gave me a task, but it was impossible to complete in the given time frame. I stayed up all night and made it possible. His reaction? He gave me the next impossible task, and the next impossible task and the next.... And thats how by completing impossible tasks after tasks, I grew in my career and went on to become → Deputy General Manager → and later Finance Controller. With every challenge, I was taught to see beyond the limits. To think bigger. To anticipate what was needed before anyone even asked. I used to think he was setting me up to fail. But in reality, I was being set up to lead. The challenges never stopped. And nor did my growth :) #FinanceController
