If you asked me how the last four months of F1 in general surgery at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust went, I’d say it went well. But if you asked me on a deeper level, I’d tell you this: General surgery exceeded my expectations. I ended up really enjoying it—even though surgery wasn’t something I was particularly drawn to. My team showed me just how much a supportive and encouraging environment can shape a junior doctor’s career (and yes, I intentionally say junior doctor because I am ✨junior✨) I’d tell you about my amazing educational supervisor who was also my clinical supervisor, and how her enthusiasm for surgery and med ed made ward rounds and teaching sessions something I actually looked forward to. She’s even encouraged me not to totally rule out surgery as a career, seeing qualities in me that I hadn’t really noticed in myself. I’d also definitely tell you that more than half of the team consisted of female surgeons and that was inspirational in itself🤩 I would talk your ears off about how this rotation taught me a lot—about the leap in responsibility from medical student to doctor and about growth both personally and professionally. My confidence has grown, and my skills have come a long way. My hands no longer tremble doing ABGs (well, for the most part), my one-handed cannulas are getting better, and if you need an NG tube, I’m not entirely useless anymore. I would tell you that I never felt unsupported, but I know they deliberately let me figure things out on my own sometimes because they believed in me more than I believed in myself. That trust pushed me to step up, and I’m so grateful for it. If you’re a medical student, I’d tell you this: surgery rotations as a doctor are a completely different experience—they’re better. You’re not just observing anymore; you’re part of the team. You’ll scrub in, get involved, and actually feel like you’re making meaningful contributions. I’d tell you, I got all of this by being open minded and willing to learn. #medicine #doctor #juniordoctor #residentdoctor #medicalstudent #productivity

What usually takes 90 days, took 24 hours! Anesthesiologists are a critical part of any hospital’s staff. Anytime you’re putting someone to sleep, you need them on board. When placing a doctor, there’s usually a 90-day credential period before the anesthesiologist can begin working in that specific facility. It happened that one of our cardiac-trained anesthesiologists was out sick. It was a weekend when no surgeries were scheduled, but an emergency could’ve occurred. We found a qualified replacement for them and then worked consecutive hours to make it happen! In just 24 hours, a new anesthesiologist was on the job! #anesthesia #consulting

The demand for certified anesthesiologist assistants (CAA) is at an all time high… But can such a good job market last? Between an aging population and a lack of training programs to keep pace with demand, I think the odds are pretty good.
