Swift Conservation: A Call to Action This #SwiftAwarenessWeek, we're highlighting the urgent need for swift conservation. UK swift populations have plummeted by 58% since 1995, primarily due to loss of nesting sites and habitat changes. How can we reverse this trend? 1. Install swift nesting bricks or boxes in new and existing buildings 2. Preserve current nesting sites during renovations 3. Create swift-friendly spaces with insect-rich habitats At Manthorpe, we're committed to providing solutions that support swift conservation. It will be good to see the population counts of these ponds - note the number of ponds per area is less than 10. Occupancy rates seem to paint a picture but I cannot help but feel what the status of newts actually is within these ponds? Where are the peak counts or density figures of newts within ponds during the breeding seasons? Comparing the national, regional, and the nature space occupancy is a pretty meaningless metric at this stage of the game - prior to the strategic organisational licenses there has been at least 20years of monitoring of site based mitigation projects which have had 100% occupancy rates Hopefully the two approaches will combine in order to provide enough pond turn over for the Newt populations in England. Natural England 4,000plus ponds will no doubt aid the recovery of Newt populations in their areas too. Demand I hear is outstripping supply of ponds so eventually hybrid schemes with sites and their BNG allocations should arise in the future..

For years, conservation was seen as something brought to communities—a plan devised elsewhere, implemented locally. This is #communitybased conservation. But here at LUMO, we’ve embraced a different vision: #communityled conservation. It’s about more than participation; it’s about ownership. It’s the local community deciding what #conservation means for their land, their future, and their wildlife. The giraffes thrive not because they are protected, but because the people protecting them see them as part of their story—a story of coexistence, #stewardship, and pride. True conservation isn’t just about preserving #wildlife; it’s about empowering people to lead the charge for their shared environment. When communities lead, #nature thrives. Happy to announce the PMEP funded project, Zangle Cove Bulkhead Removal, was named a National Fish Habitat Partnership Waters to Watch Project. This project resulted in the removal of 200 linear foot of bulkhead along the marine shoreline of South Puget Sound. It highlights the importance of working collaboratively with shoreline property owners to restore sediment transport processes important to beach-spawning fish. This World Environment Day we've been out checking in on our hives 🐝🌱 Did you know that habitat loss is generally thought to be the most important factor driving the decline in population of UK pollinators? Over 97% (an area the size of Wales) of all flower-rich grasslands have been lost in England since the 1930s, (and this is mirrored in other parts of the UK) reducing pollen and nectar sources and leading to a serious decline in the wildlife depending on wildflower-rich habitat. UK Charity Buglife's B-Lines Project is an imaginative and beautiful solution to the problem of the loss of flowers and pollinators. The B-Lines are a series of ‘insect pathways’ running through our countryside and towns, along which we are restoring and creating a series of wildflower-rich habitat stepping stones. They link existing wildlife areas together, creating a network, like a railway, that weaves across the UK landscape. This provides large areas of brand new habitat benefiting bees and butterflies– but also a host of other wildlife. If you're looking for a charity to support that directly helps re-build our pollinator habitat then Buglife might be the one for you! For more information about B-Lines and the work that Buglife do to help pollinators head over to their site www.buglife.org.uk

THE GREATEST EFFORT TO SAVE BOBWHITE QUAIL IN AMERICAN HISTORY By Ryan Sparks You read the title correctly. It might be a mouthful, but the recently announced Working Lands For Wildlife, Northern Bobwhite Pilot Project is the biggest endeavor for bobwhite quail in American history. Announced at the 2024 Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic by USDA Under Secretary Robert Bonnie, the project marks the largest concerted effort to restore bobwhite quail populations across 18 states. This is the first time national funds will be sent to states explicitly for bobwhite quail habitat. Specifically, this project earmarks $13 million for bobwhite habitat in 2024. This project is one part of a larger, 5-year effort to improve 7-million acres of bobwhite habitat. One historical obstacle with bobwhite conservation is that most bobwhite habitat occurs on private land. The Working Lands For Wildlife, Northern Bobwhite Pilot Project seeks to address that obstacle by incentivizing private landowners to participate in voluntary conservation practices that will benefit bobwhite quail.
