On Tuesday, July 9, the National Hockey League (NHL) held the sixth-annual Stanley Awards, which recognized great achievements, innovation, creativity for fan engagement, and results across all NHL clubs during the 2023-24 season. From the 134 entries submitted across the 32 NHL clubs, eight winners were selected by an external panel of leaders in the sports and entertainment industry. The Philadelphia Flyers took home the award for Social Media Club of the Year, an award that recognizes overall excellence by a club’s social media team. It was the club’s third Stanley Award win. Congratulations to all who played a part in achieving this huge, league-wide honor!

Since the 2004-2005 lockout season, the NHL has faced a significant challenge in keeping pace with the salaries and endorsement dollars enjoyed by other major leagues like the NBA, NFL, and MLB. While hockey has remained a beloved sport with passionate fans, it has often lagged behind in financial recognition. However, we are finally beginning to see a shift! Corporations are starting to invest more in marketing with the NHL, and it's evident in the recent surge of large contracts and endorsement deals. This uptick not only reflects a growing recognition of the league's potential but also signals a brighter, more lucrative future for players and teams alike. As the NHL continues to evolve, I’m excited to see how this newfound investment will enhance the sport's profile, attract fresh talent, and engage a broader audience. Here's to a thriving future for hockey! #NHL #Hockey #Salaries #Endorsements #Marketing #SportsBusiness #SportsAdvisor #PrivateBanking

In most sports, there are fervent debates among fans and media members about the Greatest Of All Time. In hockey, the debate is about who is second best, because there is no debate about the top spot: it’s Wayne Gretzky. In honor of “The Great One,” Upper Deck released a collection of exclusive memorabilia – gallery prints, game-used pucks, and jerseys – celebrating the 40th anniversary since Gretzky and the Oilers snagged their first Stanley Cup in ‘84. From the moment he made it to the NHL, it was clear Gretzky was special — though he really didn’t make it onto the average sports fan’s radar until he was traded to Los Angeles in 1988. By then, he had already led the league in scoring five times, led in assists nine times, and lifted the Stanley Cup four times. And he still had more than a decade of dominance that would follow. When Gretzky retired, he had set 61 NHL records. Twenty-five years later, he still holds 58. Many of them will stand for decades before anyone even gets close. Sports evolve fast, especially when a particular style of play dominates. Hockey has gotten faster-paced and higher scoring — the types of conditions that would lead to more players putting up Gretzky-like numbers. And yet, he stands alone. Nearly half a century later, his star has not dimmed. If anything, he shines brighter than ever with the knowledge that he may truly be untouchable. Learn more about the 40th-anniversary collection below or check out the Upper Deck Store. #hockey #sportsbusiness #innovation #greatness

Professional hockey is at an inflection point 🏒 2,541 Miles. That’s the distance the Florida Panthers and the Edmonton Oilers travel back-n-forth to face each other in the NHL Finals, setting a new record for the longest distance ever traveled between two teams in the Stanley Cup Finals. The 2024 NHL Finals have captivated viewers, setting record-breaking TV ratings and some of the highest attendance numbers in history. With 15+ teams operating at 100% capacity, or 97% capacity across the 36 host arenas, it's clear that professional hockey is at an all-time high. Looking ahead, the NHL is gearing up for the in-season 2025 NHL 4 Nations Face-Off, building on off increased fan engagement. Team sponsorship revenue surged by 23% year-over-year during the 2022-23 season, and another 10% during the 2023-2024 season, outpacing many other major U.S. sports leagues. These upward trends are expected to continue to expand the NHL’s fanbase (internationally) and continue to grow sponsorship and investment opportunities in the future. 💭 It will be interesting to see how the NHL can leverage this momentum for future growth and how investors can be a part of it. #privatecredit #privateequity #sportsmediaentertainment

How Important Is a Strong Start in the NHL? Tracking how the best (and worst) teams in the first month of recent seasons have fared by the end of it. The only thing more impressive than the players' soon-to-be-grown playoff beards is the total at the bottom of the NHL balance sheet this year. ▪ The NHL playoffs are kicking off this weekend, but the league is already set to walk away as the real winner — though it won’t be hoisting a silver cup — after raking in a record US$6.2 billion this season thanks to a number of lucrative sponsorship deals. ▪ The NHL has long been the underperforming younger sibling of the four major sports leagues, but thanks to some savvy dealmaking and marketing (and top-tier talent on the ice), the league is reaping the rewards of appealing to a wider demographic.
