Premcar turns 28 this month. Yep, 28. Some folks have mixed feelings about approaching 30, but not us. Instead of worrying about leaving our 20s, we’re celebrating. But we’re not celebrating the number 28. We’re celebrating these more important numbers from the last 28 years: - 210,000-plus new cars secondary manufactured in Australia - 5,000-plus new-car programs and projects - Hundreds of Australia’s most experienced, skilled and talented engineers, designers and new-car manufacturing staff - Dozens of the biggest global carmakers as clients, many of which we still partner with - 1 ever-growing team And the best bit about getting older? We need to talk about Jim Ratcliffe because he liked his Land Rover Defender so much that he spent a billion dollars trying to copy it. So Jim Ratcliffe is a billionaire. He currently runs one of the world’s largest chemical companies, Ineos. He also owns a 33% stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team and recently acquired a 25% stake in Manchester United. But in 2016, Ratcliffe had a problem. You see, Ratcliffe loved his Land Rover Defender and drove it all the time, so he was pretty upset when Land Rover announced that they were shutting down production on the car. And what’s the point of being a billionaire if you don’t do billionaire things So Ratcliffe called up Land Rover and tried to buy the factory to keep production going. But Land Rover said no, so he decided to take it into his own hands. Jim Ratcliffe hired engineers from all the best car companies and launched Ineos Automotive. He bought a factory from Mercedes in France and gave his team an unlimited pile of cash with just one directive - make a similar but better car than the Land Rover Defender. A few years later, the Ineos Grenadier was born. Ratcliffe named the car after his favorite pub in London, which he also bought. Each car sells for about $80,000, and they nailed the rugged, terrain look. And now that Ratcliffe has already invested $1.5 billion into the project, he wants to turn this into a legitimate car company. They’ve already sold 20,000 cars in 45 countries. What a story! P.S.
