This is so important to be not just a good builder, but to share your knowledge and insights with the new generations of the builders who are coming to the new GREEN market of construction! This interview with Raimondas Bružas - the author of the book "Straw Bale Building REDEFINED" and partner of Modulina Straw Panels in construction and assembling in Lithuania gives a lot of insights. This is what we call a real Building Straw Advocacy. Do not hesitate to have a short read on this very important topic!
We’re incredibly proud of our partner Raimondas Bružas – head of the construction company Kruna which is our great supporter in Lithuania, as well as the pioneering building advocate for the straw panel techniques. Raimondas is not just a great builder, but also the author of the book “Straw Bale Building REDEFINED” which has just been published this month. We are proud to be one of the first hand readers and we took the chance to ask a couple of questions to Raimondas on his professional journey. We invite you to read the interview with him in our latest blog post!

In Auckland, North Central North Island, New Zealand, Stevens Lawson Architects designed a stunning community centric living space to help combat homelessness. Commissioned by Auckland City Mission - Te Tāpui Atawhai, the Mass Timber project is a bastion of sustainability. Named HomeGround, the multi-purpose development combines accommodations alongside heath and human services for residents of Auckland. In addition to utilizing sustainable mass timber, architects integrated Cross-Laminated Timber into its design as the primary structural material. The builders implemented a sort-at-source waste management system, to reduce construction waste. In building the project, the developers used only non-toxic, locally sourced materials. With the entire lifecycle of the building being taken into consideration, designers added in overhangs and high performance glazing to reduce solar gain within the facility and to help reduce energy usage. Strategically placed windows and door openings allow for natural venthilarion throughout the interior spaces, and a high thermal envelope reduce the need for air conditioning. In a phenomenally innovate and sustainable approach, the building has integrated vertical gardens, alongside a rooftop urban farm with a green house. These integrations further add to the ability for the building to naturally cool and breathe. The rooftop garden offers a place of community and healing, where residents and visitors can grow flowers, vegetables and herbs, which can all be harvested and used. Rooftop composting reduces plant waste, and provides new enriched soil over time for the gardens. This project is the embodiment of what it means to build truly sustainably. This incredible project will hopefully act as a model and resource for building sustainably in cities across the world.
