Really enjoyed working on this commercial for Locate Global.
For this project, we opted to use anamorphic lenses instead of spherical ones.
You might be curious, what exactly is an anamorphic lens, and what's the difference?
Well, the difference is substantial. Anamorphic lenses aren't suitable for every project due to their unique characteristics. They offer a much wider aspect ratio compared to spherical lenses, making it more challenging to create portrait edits from the footage. However, they deliver that cinematic look we all recognise from cinema ads, Oscar-winning films like La La Land, and the iconic style of J.J. Abrams.
𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗰 𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀:
𝗪𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼: Anamorphic lenses capture a wider field of view, providing an aspect ratio typically around 2.39:1. This aspect ratio gives films that expansive, epic feel associated with blockbuster movies and high-end commercials.
𝗨𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗕𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗵: The out-of-focus elements, or bokeh, have a distinct oval shape rather than the circular bokeh produced by spherical lenses. This creates a unique, aesthetically pleasing background blur that’s highly sought after in cinematic productions.
𝗟𝗲𝗻𝘀 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘀: Anamorphic lenses produce characteristic horizontal lens flares when bright lights are in the frame. These flares are often used artistically to enhance the visual impact of a scene.
𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗵: The horizontal compression allows for more image data to be captured on the same film or sensor area, providing a greater sense of depth and dimensionality in the shot. This compression also contributes to the cinematic feel by subtly altering the proportions and enhancing the spatial relationship between objects in the frame.
𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: While sometimes seen as imperfections, the slight distortion and vignetting (darkening at the corners of the image) can add character and a vintage feel to the footage, which can be desirable for certain storytelling styles.
This project's success hinged on a strong cinematic storyline, demanding that distinctive, iconic look.
A huge thanks to Samuel Ackland-Jones for trusting our vision and choice of cameras and lenses.

"We chose to shoot the Locate Global commercial using anamorphic lenses from Blazar. This decision allowed for wider aspect ratios and a shallower depth of field, giving the ad a truly cinematic look."
