Technical Recruiting in L&E - here are my five cents worth of input. I always read the job descriptions with interest. A JD says a lot about a company and their attitude towards maintenance in general, and technical staff in particular. To recruit effectively, the recruiter must understand the complexity of the job and the amount of qualification and experience to perform it. The issue I have with most of the recruitment is that specialists are hired by generalists. Some job descriptions point towards a 'jack of all trades' who must be able to work on rides, fix lighting rigs and repair the midway games while he is also an expert in the installation and maintenance of all other types of equipment. When writing such a job description it will leave the door open to opportunists. Mechanical and electrical work are vastly different, even if both can be part of the same equipment. To put it in perspective - technicians are like doctors. Would you trust your optometrist with a bone saw? Yes, many skills carry over into new fields and can be adapted, but it requires a process and not a shove into the deep end of the pool. Audit the maintenance programs in the company and evaluate the required skills for each department scope. You may find that when the word hydraulics appears anywhere, an engineer is required. The manual for the equipment in question may limit the work to changing of fluids at prescribed intervals, and all other maintenance may be excluded from the operators scope. Only the factory can open and maintain certain components. An engineer hired to perform such routine tasks will not get much satisfaction out of it and soon leave. On more modern equipment it is often the case that the last thing the manufacturer wants is for anyone to do any engineering modifications. I have written off two rides due to 'engineering'. Some of my best colleagues were engineers, but they knew why they were hired and what their mission was. Those were my most successful interactions. In many cases, the equipment types, future expansion plans with new gear and concepts are not followed by a technical back up plan. The new gear is just handed over to the existing technical teams to deal with on their own. Technical management must be present when new equipment is considered for operation, if the teams are expected to maintain it, they might have opinions about placement, disassembly and inspection, possibly within a very very cramped space. If compromises have to be made, buy-in is required from all of the management, not a burden to be passed on to a single department, because they have people known collectively as 'engineers' and they will sort it out. Its also easy for an engineer to tell if the recruiter is not versed in this field. Its not a fair interview for both. ⚒
