It’s a big day for the technology lifecycle management world as AppDirect, led by Amherst College graduate Nicolas Desmarais announces the intent to acquire vCom Solutions, a longtime veteran in the telecom management, managed mobility and cloud management spaces.
vCom has long been known for its combination of spend aggregation, managed services, and professional services to support midmarket IT departments.
One of the most interesting operational aspects that the press release revealed was “Prior to closing of the transaction, vCom will spin out its direct sales team and branded franchise advisors to become an exclusive partner to AppDirect, enabling it to expand into new markets and areas of differentiation.”
This is an interesting step to prepare the sales team to sell a broader portfolio of services and it is not one that often happens when a smaller company is purchased. I honestly wonder why this doesn’t happen more often, as one of the biggest challenges of mergers and acquisitions is to onboard sales teams.
Of course, the biggest question here is how much access vCom customers will have to the larger AppDirect offering, and how those relationships will be determined from the pricing and product perspective as well as the timing.
This acquisition also speaks to the potential for telecom expense management solutions to play apart in IT marketplaces, enterprise architecture management, and IT financial management solutions going forward. Network and mobility are often big gaps in each of these areas, but for some reason, these larger IT management markets have had a blind spot towards looking at the telecom management world. Obvious examples include looking at the likes of ServiceNow and IBM Apptio and their lack of support for network management.
With the acquisition of vCom, one of the top options for telecom expense management-based managed services is now off the table for the megavendors seeking to improve their network, mobility, and cloud spend unless they decide to pick up AppDirect as a whole. The race is on for acquiring effective IT support of communications services, which is still globally a $1.5 trillion market even if it’s growth is not as fast as cloud or the current AI-driven data center services. #etma #finops #itmarketplace
