Fiona Campbell, CEO of the Association of Scotland’s Self-Caterers, said: “This is a predictable mess. We consistently highlighted the dire consequences that would follow from a draconian approach to short-term let regulation and these forewarnings are becoming glaringly apparent. However, this may be the tip of the iceberg if yet more self-catering businesses close, with the difficulties faced this year being amplified in 2025. Short-term lets were scapegoated for all manner of ills and treated as a panacea for wider housing challenges despite the fact that they make up only 0.7% of Edinburgh’s total housing stock. The reduction in the availability of this type of accommodation – an essential part of the tourism sector – is driving up costs. The Council once said there were 12,000 STLs in the city but just 105 secondary lets have been granted a full licence. Edinburgh is renowned for its unique cultural offering but such bungled policymaking over short-term lets risks damaging its position as a place to visit and do business. A world-leading Festival city should be more than able to accommodate comedians yet it risks becoming a laughing stock of its own making. Even at the eleventh hour, industry stands ready to work with local and national government so we can fairly and effectively regulate the sector before irreversible damage is done.” https://lnkd.in/eT5UxeJ7

Our View for 2025: Protecting London’s Nightlife London’s nightlife is more than culture; it’s the heartbeat of our economy and a bridge connecting communities. From launching our first venue in 2014 to creating The Little Door & Co group of today, Kamran Dehdashti and I have been so proud to be part of such a vibrant cultural scene. But, as we look to the New Year, its future is under threat. The Numbers Are Sobering: The UK now has only 870 clubs, with 5 closing every week (per NME). If this continues, nightlife itself could vanish by 2026. The struggles aren’t just about government policies—they’re local. Licensing committees hold the power to shape the fate of venues. As operators who’ve navigated this landscape for a decade, we’ve seen the challenges firsthand. What Needs to Change? 1. Balanced Licensing: Respect residents’ concerns but support responsible operators who contribute positively. 2. Encourage Alternatives: The demand for curated, relaxed late-night venues is undeniable—let’s embrace and expand it. 3. Champion Nuance: Penalising good operators for the mistakes of a few bad actors stifles innovation and growth. Manchester’s thriving post-pandemic nightlife shows the potential of all of the above, and even in a problematic operating environment post-pandemic, many venues have taken off. London must follow suit or risk losing its cultural soul. Any solution must: Advocate for the sector with deep industry knowledge. Unite businesses, residents, and councils for win-win solutions. Champion effective management strategies over restrictive policies. London’s nightlife is at a tipping point. Without action, we risk losing a cornerstone of our city’s identity. Let’s work together to ensure it not only survives but thrives. #NightlifeMatters #SupportLocal

We all want a nightlife we can be proud of, and that our global city deserves. In 2019 we updated the City’s “Late Night Trading” planning controls to cut red tape and enable venues to trade later. This made a real difference and the sector was just starting to recover from the impact of the lockouts when the pandemic reached Sydney. Now the cost of rent, transport connectivity and demand, which has been impacted by cost of living pressures, is once again making it increasingly difficult to operate hospitality venues. That really hurts our city’s economic, social and cultural life – so all levels of government need to step up. This week at Council we will be discussing planning changes that will better manage sound issues, and our plan to introduce Special Entertainment Precincts across the city. We're proposing to overlay Special Entertainment Precincts status over our existing well-established and well-understood late night trading areas. This will make it cheaper and easier to run a successful venue and give a vital boost to our nightlife while, importantly, maintaining residential amenity. It is important that we consult extensively with you to get this right, so I look forward to sharing with you the outcome of Council’s deliberations and how you can have your say.

Although nobody wants to be made redundant, the timing of mine has perhaps been fortunate. I've had time, in between job hunting, to spend the school summer holidays with family. But it has me thinking: has London entertainment and activities evolved over the years? I grew up outside London and would primarily come to London to visit extended family. My perception, in the 1980s, was that daylife consisted of museums you had to pay for and parks. Nightlife consisted of alcohol (pubs & nightclubs) and the theatre. However, it feels there has been a change. Of course, what was available in the 1980s is still available but there is more diversification and evolution. Pubs are more open to providing food and a dining experience. So much so, more pubs are welcoming children with a more family friendly experience. Theatres are hosting more diverse performances. Museums are perhaps more diverse and interactive for both children and adults. Dining out seems more common place with more variety of quality cuisine and experiences. There also seems to be more choice of outdoor activities: crazy golf, urban farms, ziplining as examples. Of course, this is right. More diversification. More evolution. Providing what is wanted in modern London life. But, sometimes, the best choices are still the outdoor family picnics and lunches with kids playing. The event is very short; why do we need an MC? The reason is to keep to time and prevent speakers from taking too long. It is the MC's job to run a short but successful program. #wedding #reception #MC #event

Over-Promising and Under-Delivering - A Cautionary Tale Last week, we spent a week all-inclusive at the Ammos Luxury Resort in Kos. The weather was amazing, (we were lucky to miss the wildfires), the food was good and the people were lovely. Sadly, there is a but…..the hotel over promised and failed to deliver. Why? As a ‘resort’ I expected something bigger. This was a small hotel, on a small plot of land, with limited facilities in an isolated location. It didn’t help that they had been going through a renovation and the hotel wasn’t quite finished. Marketed for couples and families, my kids would have been bored in 10 minutes. There was a fabulous pool, but not designed for children. There was a kids club and play area, but the play area was in full sun and had few activities to keep the children interested. In reality, if you’d have told me I was going to a luxury boutique hotel, with beautiful rooms in a secluded location perfect for relaxing, it would have completely lived up to those expectations. The importance of positioning your hotel or product correctly is so important as it sets the tone for everything to come.
