There is no single "Right Architecture" that applies universally across organizations; the effectiveness of any enterprise architecture (EA) is deeply impacted by an organization’s size, maturity, and cultural context. The true value of EA lies in its alignment with and support for the unique business goals of each organization. Therefore, to achieve optimal impact, enterprise architecture must be tailored and customised to meet the specific needs and strategic objectives of your organization. The dynamic between the CEO and CIO in the context of Enterprise Architecture is pivotal. While the CEO should oversee the strategic integration and application of EA across the enterprise, the CIO should act as the custodian of the Enterprise Anatomy assets, akin to a CFO’s role with financial assets. This dual approach not only maximizes the strategic impact of EA but also ensures the meticulous management and security of its critical assets, balancing visionary leadership with prudent guardianship to drive the organization forward. #EnterpriseArchitecture #CIO #CEO

Enterprise Architecture, trends and vision leadership... by Austin Steinmetz https://lnkd.in/eZZFuDFK This is an insightful and somewhat reinforcing Gartner brief on EA (some confirmation bias for my part 😉). However, I did find it a little conflicted and in danger of persisting some of the misunderstanding, misuse and abuse of EAs by executives and senior managers. I think some expectation management is needed here, to ensure executives and senior managers first understand their need, and the roles and competencies of resources available to them and in the marketplace, to then effectively resource that need. Firstly, EA's scope has always been the entire Enterprise, it's in the name! Second, the emergence of specialist architects from networks to business I believe is largely in response for more effective resourcing of the greater detail for those parts of the enterprise and its architecture, such as from market and industry complexities, not to mention the recent rise of AI. Third, EAs are a finite resource who should have familiarity and appreciation of the whole enterprise but (being finite) cannot nor should not be reasonably expected to be experts in all aspects of the enterprise, being neither omnipotent nor omniscient! They may well bring expertise in certain areas and may have to upskill quickly in others where there is a need or desire. e.g. from Business or IT or AI So would you expect a building architect to be an expert in the manufacture of the light bulbs or rather the best use of those light bulbs within the building and its architecture? Likewise, don't expect an EA to need to be a hands-on expert (and to code!) on the latest Gen-3 alpha AI model but rather to understand and help exploit the benefits of its use to drive value in the enterprise and for its customers. i.e. bring the right tool to the right job, and not for all the jobs. e.g. over-multi-hatting! Austin, would be great to have and discuss your thoughts on this and in respect of the brief.
