TRADITIONAL INNOVATION VS SUSTAINABLE INNOVATION In the drive for development and implementation of clean energy sources like solar power, wind power and others, reduce dependence on fossil fuel and mitigate climate change, our traditional mode of innovation yearns for sustainable innovations. And, why is this so? Traditional Innovation does not drive towards environmental sustainability. This is where Sustainable innovation comes in. In traditional innovation when new products are introduced and product developers traditionally work to create a design that works to fulfill a requirement. The old way of creating new things without environmental considerations is seen as traditional innovation. While sustainable innovation happens when environmental sustainability becomes a key consideration for how a product is designed, manufactured and serviced. Sustainable innovation drives to achieve carbon neutrality and zero waste, improve product circularity (i.e from the use, to recycling) and reuse and energy efficiency Sustainable innovation involves using products and concepts that were created as a result of environmentally aware practices and designs Examples of Sustainable Innovations include: 1. Renewable energy technologies, circular economy practices(use, recycle and reuse) 2. Sustainable agriculture involving precision farming, agroecology and vertical farming to promote food production, reduce resource consumption and protect biodiversity 3. Sustainable transportation that include developing electric vehicles, improving and promoting alternative fuels and mobility solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions Of what importance is Sustainable Innovations? Sustainable Innovations is important because it supports growth and profitability by facilitating product reuse and circularity and making business operations more efficient and safe. The earlier we learn to adopt this system of Innovation the better. It is of no essence to stay in the school of traditional innovation and continually being environmentally insensitive to the ills that this innovation presents. Adopting this mode of innovation, called Sustainable Innovation not only benefits us and the environment but also for the greater good of future generations. Giving them the opportunity to inherit a healthy and viable environment. What solutions do you think will help hasten the adoption of Sustainable innovation? To celebrate World Sustainability Day we are sharing initial results of our "red goes green" campaign ⬇️ Over the last 3 months we ran a global IPS project to increase sustainability awareness in Aalberts integrated piping systems. A few email blasts, an internal awareness campaign and 1 sustainability challenge later, we have the results! We suggested 23 actions in the categories of food, waste, home living, transport and consumer behaviour and encouraged our employees to take part - of course we also let people add their own sustainable activities to the list. We found out interesting things when it comes to differences between our European and American colleagues (for example public transport was very popular in Europe, while carpooling took center stage in the transport category in the US), but maybe most importantly we found out that the majority of people were already doing some or all of the sustainable activities we suggested! We realised we are not starting from scratch - we are connecting to people already engaged in sustainability in their day to day life. Below is a quick summary! This was a collaboration between the EU and the US IPS team and I want to give a special thanks to Sydney Whitman, MS-ICT for taking ownership of the project throughout and creating a great visual summary at the end 👏
Sustainability is a global effort, and at Aalberts integrated piping systems, we’re proud to lead the charge with our amazing employees' help. This year, we launched our "red goes green" sustainability challenge to understand the meaningful actions our people are already taking—and the results are truly inspiring. From reusable coffee mugs to turning off the lights, our team members across the globe are making a difference. How do you contribute to sustainability in your everyday life?

10/12 A post a day until the launch of our 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲: How do we build products nature would love? Over twenty years ago, William McDonough & Michael Braungart published their book about Cradle to Cradle. The concept includes three key ideas: ➿ Everything is a resource for something else ☀ Use clean and renewable energy 🌈 Celebrate diversity 🥇 Cradle to Cradle is not just a methodology of product design and management; it is also a product standard overseen by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. ☘ In the end, it comes down to designing products the way nature does. 🎓 Want to learn more about sustainable products? Making our lives greener can start with simple changes. Putting solar panels on your roof? Yes, it helps by reducing reliance on dirtier energy sources. Working from home a couple of days a week? You could slash your commuting carbon footprint by 40%. Consider investing in silvopastures, too. These are not just farms; they're carbon sponges, absorbing CO2 while supporting sustainable agriculture and helping farmers maintain their land. It's about finding those win-win scenarios that benefit us and the planet. Are you a sustainability director looking for innovative ways to green your operations or curious about options like silvopastures? I'm here to explore and discuss sustainable solutions with you. PS. #latestactivities Sustainability is a critical global focus as the world seeks to address the urgent environmental challenges of our time. With the increasing awareness of the need for sustainable development, industries and companies are taking decisive steps towards integrating eco-friendly solutions into their business models. Innomost, a pioneering company based in Kokkola, Finland, is at the forefront of this movement, driving the green transition with cutting-edge technology and innovative biobased products. By upcycling forest industry side streams, such as birch bark, Innomost transforms these materials into high-performing alternatives to fossil-based products. Their mission aligns with the global goals of sustainability, environmental protection, climate action, and economic equality, showcasing the power of green innovation to drive business success and environmental impact reduction. Pioneering sustainability through the circular economy The concept of the circular economy is central to Innomost's operations. In a traditional linear economy, raw materials are extracted, used, and discarded as waste, leading to significant environmental degradation. In contrast, the circular economy focuses on minimizing waste and maximising the use of resources through recycling, reuse, and upcycling. Innomost’s approach exemplifies the potential of circularity by upcycling birch bark, a natural byproduct of forest industries, into valuable materials that can be used in a wide range of products across different industries. The company’s patented technology allows it to extract high-performance biobased ingredients, such as Barkinno™ Birch Bark Powder, Betuinno™ Betulin, and Suberinno™ Suberin, offering sustainable alternatives to environmentally harmful ingredients. These innovative products can be applied in various fields, including cosmetics, personal care, adhesives, coatings, and paints, making them essential in industries looking to reduce their carbon footprint and transition to more sustainable practices. Innomost’s process is designed to be energy-efficient, reducing the environmental impact associated with manufacturing. By using forest industry side streams, the company ensures that no deforestation is necessary, as birch bark is a renewable resource. The company’s commitment to carbon neutrality throughout the production process further solidifies its role as a leader in sustainable innovation.
