The news is that Microsoft has entered into an agreement with Constellation Energy to restart a Nuclear power plant to meet it’s energy needs for the purpose of AI. The amount of Energy usage that is involved in AI Computing is very staggering. According to a datapoint from IDC, by 2026 it could reach 800- 900 Terrawatthours, almost equivalent to the size of entire Germany’s energy needs. While AI is in pole position for the Tech news and visibility, ROI (Return on Investments) on AI investments is less talked about, yet. Let us not forget that Industry has spent close to a decade to finally settle the realities around hosting in Public cloud, v/s On prem/Private clouds v/s Hybrid etc, navigating through challenges around payloads, security and such. For AI this progression could be even longer. It is not just the technology absorption that we are talking about, We are talking about the REAL DEAL on energy needs. Gartner believes about 60 % of the AI projects will be dropped by enterprises by 2028 as they would no longer be viable with good ROI’s, 80 to 90 % of the AI projects operate on a similar status TODAY. The dramatic increase in electric demand caused by the actual and planned development of large data centers has the potential to change the trajectory of GHG emission reductions in the United States and elsewhere. Credit to Google for a seemingly thoughtful approach not only by committing to [effectively] finance the construction of new nuclear generation but do it in a way that may actually promote commercial deployment of at least one developer’s SMRs. Other participants in the AI supply chain, not just data developers but specialized chip manufacturers and groups such as OpenAI ought to consider participating in such emission free electric generation development as they are causing the problem. #electricutilities #climatechange #AI
