Last week I had the opportunity to lead a session at the RICS Building Surveying Conference in London. You can access a full copy of my discussion slides via the post 👇 My session was 'Unlocking the Path to Net Zero: Strategies for effective integration of sustainability.' My basis thesis is that for ESG to be truly effective, it needs to be integrated into the fabric of an organisation. My focus was very much on: - ESG & Sustainability and why it matters, and why so much of a focus on real assets - The market opportunity and - Turning ‘Green’ ambitions into reality underpinned by data. As always, I stressed the importance of meaningful and robust data. I also mentioned that making commitments without anything underpinning them is a bit like saying I was to lose weight, only I have no idea my starting point, nor any idea how I'll get there - pointless and hyperbole. Implementing ESG practices and achieving green building certifications can enhance an organization’s reputation and provide a competitive advantage. Companies with strong ESG performance are increasingly attractive to investors and consumers. Similarly, green buildings can attract tenants and buyers who prioritize sustainability, leading to potentially higher property values and rental rates.

On this day of global recognition of Sustainability, we reflect on all the different ways we define sustainability, and who defines it. Our work allows us to think about sustainability from the perspective of the private sector and industry priorities, as well as from the perspective of global institutions that guide the goals and metrics. It has also allowed us to think about sustainability from a community perspective, and an Indigenous perspective. For the last three years we have worked with Fort McMurray 468 First Nation on their 2021 Sustainability Report to Community, and this year their 2022/2023 Indigenous ESG (IESG) Report. #DoubleMateriality requires organizations to consider the material impact of their operations on the environment and society. This concept pushes financial decision-makers to account for both "outside-in" materiality (how environmental and social factors affect the business) and "inside-out" materiality (how the business impacts the environment and communities). Regulations like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) in the EU drive this shift, requiring companies to report on these dual impacts. Here are three ways to understand double materiality in ESG reporting and the global implications.

In 2022, one of DeLuca’s first initiatives as CEO was to establish a dedicated Green Team comprised of executives from departments across the company. The Green Team, along with our newly appointed ESG Manager, Apaulo Malloy, ensure that the firm’s sustainability agenda is comprehensive, actionable and aligned with its stakeholders.    As a company, we are prioritizing adapting our properties to potential changes in the environment through concise energy, water and waste management programs.
