We have completed our review of the first draft of v5 of the US Green Building Council's LEED scheme documents and have several concerns with the revised text: 🔸 Omission of PEFC: PEFC is not listed as a creditable scheme, unlike in the current v4. 🔸 Structural Timber Elements: These are not considered creditable under some requirements. 🔸 Inconsistent Terminology: There is inconsistent use of terms to describe certification schemes. 🔸 Unequal Credit Allocation: There is an unequal distribution of credits among certification schemes. 🔸 Certification Requirement: There is no requirement for structural timber elements to be certified to be creditable under the ‘Reduce Embodied Carbon’ requirements. Environmental product declarations (EPD for short) are an important basis for the planning and sustainability assessment of a building. An EPD declares the impact of a construction product on its environment over its “life cycle”, from the raw material to ready-to-install product. The products are evaluated based on the life cycle assessments, which show various environmental influences. The European standard EN 15804 defines the basic rules for environmental product declarations of construction products. EPDs created in accordance with this standard can be used to further calculate the environmental performance of entire buildings. You can find the EPD for HOPPE door and window handles at: https://brnw.ch/21wKHLU #HOPPE #EPD #environment #architecture #constructionproduct #constructionindustry

How can we actively Gear Legislation and Policies to Pave the Way for Sustainable Architecture? In our recent exploration, we have asked 6 capacities from within and around the building sector how we can put legislation and policies at play in steering the construction industry towards sustainability. Traditionally, regulations focused on individual safety, but amid the climate crisis, there's a pressing need to extend this protection to our planet. "Sustainable development for future generations should be the very fundament of any law. If we find that the national law in its core does not support sustainable development, it would mean that we would have to rewrite the legal code. Our task today is to methodologically and philosophically reconstruct a logic or an ideology for why we build and if we have to build and with what methods, based on a fundamental understanding of sustainability and sustainable practices." – Kai Reaver, Head of Architecture & Chief Advisor NAL This article is part of the Nordic Sustainable Construction program, an initiative by the The Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Council and Nordic Innovation. Our goal? To lead the Nordic region towards sustainable and competitive construction while minimizing environmental impacts. Rules and regulations are very relevant for the transition to a circular economy. Thanks to METREX and The Hague for organizing this event. 👇 The results will be used for the ASSET Interreg project, in which 11 partners in North-West Europe research what an economic-spatial strategy for a circular Eurodelta could look like.
Are you curious about the impact of the wave of new European laws and regulations on circular construction? Join the METREX conference in The Hague on November 14 (afternoon) and 15 (morning) to explore the latest developments shaping circular built environments within the European Union. This event is essential for those in the construction industry, including both companies and public authorities, who want to stay ahead of the evolving landscape. We’ll cover cutting-edge circular construction practices, the updated Construction Products Regulation (CPR), and the implications of other key laws on urban regions. Additionally, we’ll highlight opportunities for local governments to advance circular construction, particularly through public procurement and strategic policies. Register today to learn how your organisation can lead the way toward a sustainable, circular future. https://lnkd.in/eip86FaS Menno RubbensHenk BouwmanJakub MazurViviana RubboEmma de WijsWillem van WindenMartijn KostermanJurre BaijardsDemelza SchefferYvonne van der LaanYoan KostadinovskiFanauw HoppeEveline BakkerMichiel BoschBart BomasArco TimmermansThimo de NijsJoost Bijlsma

Q: Does the EU Taxonomy apply to #woodbasedpanels? A: No. Yes. Sort of. Maybe. Indirectly. Soon?! It's one of the most frequently asked questions by our Irish Customers, #architects and #architecturaltechnicians in the last few months and to be brutally honest, having had a quick look on a number of occasions, I still didn't have a clue... so I dug a little deeper! I love getting asked questions that I don't know the answers to because it makes me go out and find them, and then pass them on. Then last month Marketing dept ask me if there's anything topical and relevant in the industry that our customers should know about, and I say, 'yeah, actually there is'! I definitely don't have all the answers, but hopefully this interview with Robbie Cousins published in the current issue of Irish Construction News/Constructionnews.ie gives our Irish customers and #specifiers a bit more more clarity, and more importantly they feel that they can come and talk to us about it. It's far too easy for the industry to bury its head in the sand on complex but important new regulations that are designed to protect our climate. Thoughts, ideas and feedback welcome as always. #EUTAXONOMY #architecture #sustainability Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (RIAI) Irish Green Building Council CIAT Republic of Ireland Centre
