You’ve likely heard it before, but it bears repeating: The U.S. maternal mortality rate is 10 times higher than our peer nations, and Black women are 3 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women. And 80-90% of these deaths are preventable. Yes, you read that correctly: preventable. Earlier this week, our team member Emily (Steinberg) McCareins had the privilege of attending the Black Maternal Health Caucus Stakeholder Summit in Joliet, IL. The Black Maternal Health Caucus, founded and led by Office of Rep. Lauren Underwood and Rep. Alma Adams, is tackling this crisis head-on. It’s one of the largest bipartisan caucuses in the House and has introduced the Momnibus—a package of 13 bills offering the most comprehensive solution to address the maternal health crisis. The Summit was buzzing with energy and optimism. Here are some of Emily’s key takeaways: 🤲 Maternal health is a team effort: It requires collaboration, diverse perspectives, and unity. Whether that's in the form of the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS-funded Illinois Maternal Health Task Force with 125 diverse perspectives, or what we do here at Partum Health: treating every birth experience as unique with collaboration between clinical and non-clinical providers, the emphasis on partnership is the key to lasting change. 🧗♀️ Failure is a stepping stone: Learning from past mistakes is crucial to making lasting change. 💸 $200M in federal funding is available: Now, we must ensure it reaches the families who need it most. Keep an eye out for grants, primarily HRSA and state and local governments. ➡ Change is happening: The dedication and energy of those working on this issue every day make it clear that progress is coming.

🔍 Disturbing Reality: Maternal Mortality in the US 🔍 Despite being one of the world's most advanced nations, the United States faces a shocking and unacceptable reality—our maternal mortality rates are the highest among industrialized countries. Why are so many mothers facing life-threatening complications from childbirth in a country with such advanced medical capabilities? 📈 The numbers are more than just statistics; they represent real families and communities affected by losses that could have been prevented. As healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community members, we must address this critical issue head-on. 🎯 Our Goal: Trend Towards Zero It is imperative that we strive towards making maternal mortality a rare exception rather than a common occurrence. Here are three ways we can start making a difference: Enhanced Access to Care: Ensure every expectant mother, regardless of her background or financial situation, has access to consistent, high-quality prenatal and postnatal care. Education and Awareness: Increase awareness about the importance of maternal health and provide education on preventive measures to expectant mothers and healthcare providers alike. Policy and Advocacy: Advocate for policies that support maternal health improvements, such as funding for maternal health programs, research into maternal mortality causes, and better training for maternal health professionals. 💪 Join the Movement Let's come together to address this crisis. Every step we take towards improving maternal health is a step towards saving lives. Share your thoughts, experiences, and suggestions on how we can turn this around. Together, we can change these statistics and give mothers the care they deserve. #MaternalHealth #Healthcare #PolicyChange #SaveMothers #Advocacy #PublicHealth #motherslivesmatter #MIH #CPC #nomorematernalhealthdeserts #trendtowardszero https://lnkd.in/eGeGXSaw
