Why did Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz endorse Trump? Last week on their podcast, Marc and Ben endorsed Trump out of concern for what they call “Little Tech” (aka startups). Below is how I understand their rationale. Little Tech has an enormous opportunity to increase the standard of living of regular Americans and underwrite many decades of American technology supremacy. Maintaining that supremacy is a first-class political issue on par with any other issue. Historically, Little Tech has been independent of politics, but current government policies have enabled large incumbents to gain significant regulatory capture. They have pulled the rope ladder up behind them and said, “We don’t care, because we don’t have to.” Marc and Ben have spent significant time in D.C. and believe Trump’s policies are more favorable for innovation - specifically on blockchain and AI. The Republican party platform includes major endorsements of the crypto industry, and Trump recognizes that America must beat China in AI. Conversely, they believe the Biden administration has been hostile to crypto including suing many of A16Z's portfolio companies. They also cite the administration's executive order to regulate AI. Their biggest critique of Biden is his proposed policy to tax unrealized capital gains, which they believe will discourage entrepreneurship and reduce risk capital. Importantly, Marc and Ben were able to regularly speak with Trump (including having dinner with him) but couldn’t get a meeting with Biden or Gary Gensler. Regardless of the outcome in November, I expect the intersection of public policy and innovation will get increasing levels of attention in our national politics and media. K. Ventures has always had expertise in this area, but I anticipate more VC firms will move in and founders will increasingly prioritize policy knowledge and lobbying capabilities when choosing investors.
