An opportunity..... to identfy the worst designed roundabouts in the UK. I give you the M11 Birchanger Green roundabout as a fine example of an over complex arrangement, with non standard exits poisoned to ensure the highest chances of a kiss and tell (collision to you) indecent. There's rumours that some people never get to leave (perhaps). And to make it more interesting, the adjacent road works that have been underway (Exit to Stortford) for the last 5+ years with a thousand cones (OK a slight exaggeration), with a truly wonderful circuit to add to your journey time, if you happen to be existing Bishops Stortford; No right turn onto Birchanger roundabout results in a detour to the A120, going west before an about turn is available to you to redirect to the Birchanger maze. But don't try reconnecting onto the A120 on the "other side", as your offered a suicidal left turn. Among the interesting things about the roundabout is the multiple options to go south onto the M11 (dependent on your circuit route), you have up to three, yes three options to get onto the southbound M11 Lane. Mind, you have to successfully cross the yellow checkered sea (hatchings to you) of which, there are multiple examples, dependent on your circuit route. With the potential to make a directional error, such is the vast expense of the hatchings. This morning I almost went onto the service station by error. High sided vehicles blocking your view makes for excitement in combination with the cones.

It's time for a parking fun fact! Did you know the first multilevel parking garage was built in Chicago in 1918? It would take a few decades for them to catch on, but once cities realized they needed better urban planning, the idea of saving space by making several floors for cars made sense. New guidance is paving the way for better bicyclist experiences at roundabouts, which is exciting to see — so, what does this guidance look like in practice? 💡 A built example of a separated bike lane around a roundabout (or in this case, a traffic circle, due to a stop sign installed for safety reasons) is Powder House Square in Somerville, Massachusetts. Before its conversion, Powder House Square was a convoluted convergence of six two-way streets, with no defined path of travel for bicyclists. 😵 Today, the traffic circle has a well-defined single traffic lane and a separated bike lane runs around the perimeter.
