💬 Read my vision for safer streets and a thriving Ward 3: https://bit.ly/3ZoqVJs 🚦 Safer Streets, Stronger Neighbourhoods, and a Thriving Ward 3 🚦 Ward 3 is at the heart of Saint John—a place where vibrant neighbourhoods, families, and community life intersect. But with over 300 traffic calming requests citywide, it’s clear that our streets need to better reflect the needs of the people who live and work here. This isn’t just about slowing cars; it’s about making Ward 3 a place where people feel safe, where families want to stay, and where communities can grow stronger. Streets aren’t one-size-fits-all—some are designed for traffic, while others are meant to be the heart of our neighbourhoods. Recognizing these differences is how we create a more livable, thriving city. As a driver, I know how essential vehicles are in New Brunswick. But our neighbourhoods deserve better than being treated as shortcuts. A safer Ward 3 is a stronger Ward 3, and the time to act is now. #CommunityLeadership #SaferStreets #StrongNeighbourhoods #SaintJohn

In the model we developed with Los Angeles Walks, promotores also organize creative actions to highlight the need for safer streets. Here's an example: 🚏 After witnessing a senior falling on the sidewalks and hearing complaints from other neighbors, Karina Noriega advocated for even-paved sidewalks and a curb ramp at a streetlight crossing near a commonly used bus stop by seniors in her Council District 10. 🎶 With our guidance, Karina and a group of promotores organized a block party to bring stakeholders together, have fun by closing a street block for people, and raise awareness for the need for a curb ramp. Due to budget restraints, a long queue for the sidewalk repair program, and changes in council district leadership, Karina and her neighbors' request to install the curb ramp or fix the sidewalk has faced delays. Her request has moved up the queue since 2018, but the process has been even slower with the aforementioned challenges. Securing life-saving infrastructure can take decades. That’s why the Los Angeles Walks’ Safe Street Promotor Training provides community leaders with the organizing tools they need to continue advocating for safe streets long after our time with them. #Mobility #CommunityEngagement #InnovativePractice #SafeStreets #UrbanPlanning #PublicHealth
