Amazon is making a big change by replacing its "Just Walk Out" technology with smart carts. I'm curious to see the research and data behind this decision. It will be interesting to see if smart carts will gain enough adoption to become a new retail trend. Check out the NPR article to learn more about Amazon's decision.

I spent almost a decade working in the retail industry, and the main theme for the last decade was #Amazon and its disruptive innovation. Their moves carried immense shock and awe, prompting established retailers to realign their strategies in defense against the e-commerce giant. Fast forward to today, and the landscape looks quite different. Amazon's "Just Walk Out" cashierless technology, once heralded as revolutionary, hasn't achieved the sweeping adoption many anticipated. The hard truth? It simply cannot be scaled up in a profitable manner. This experience underscores an important lesson: Disruptive innovation is undoubtedly powerful BUT the devil lies in the execution. Operationalizing a disruptive technology at scale is an immense challenge that often determines success or failure. Moreover, not every innovation can achieve the coveted economies of scale. Infact, not every innovation needs to be mass value. Also, do not assume cheap capital and forever funding when making your projections. The path to #operationalizing strategy is neither a pure science nor an art form. It's a delicate balance of clear and upfront vision, iterative planning, and constantly going back to first principles and P&L. Most importantly, having the right talent to drive the execution, persistently and tenaciously. https://lnkd.in/dRZeNDtu #Amazon, #innovation

The press has titled this news with a very negative intention, but in reality, it should be seen as pivoting or adjusting as #Amazon continues to experiment and innovate. Amazon is making adjustments in its grocery stores, moving away from the "Just Walk Out" technology. WHY? Accuracy and cost are challenges, as Amazon relies on cameras and sensors to track purchases. So, Amazon will shift towards more reliable and cost-effective solutions. It's important to note that Amazon is long on improving the prices of payments, checkouts, and identity detection, as seen with their recent news on palm-recognition services (https://lnkd.in/gerC6nCm). https://lnkd.in/gd6YpCBy #Amazon #grocery #innovation #technology #pivot #adjustment #checkout #payments #identitydetection #palmrecognition #justwalkout #ecommerce #retail

Amazon said earlier this month that it was removing its “Just Walk Out” cashierless technology from the 28 Amazon Fresh and two Whole Foods grocery stores in the U.S. that used the system. The news triggered a cascade of headlines declaring the demise of the technology, one of Amazon’s boldest bets to reinvent the way consumers buy products at brick-and-mortar stores. The reality is a bit more complicated. Yes, it's fair to view the move as a setback from one perspective, but Amazon is not abandoning Just Walk Out technology and is actually expanding its reach in some categories. To learn more about the company's plans, I recently spoke to Dilip Kumar, an Amazon vice president and one of the co-inventors of the technology. Here's the Q&A, my latest for Fortune, in which we also discussed what role human staff actually plays behind the scenes. What do you think of this latest decision by Amazon?

Retail Today / Retail Renaissance: Don’t you hate it when someone says “I told you that wouldn’t work”? “Tech Panacea” #techpanacea Amazon changed the Retail Industry forever!! Creating exciting opportunities for commerce from anywhere from anyone. They woke up a sleeping industry and started a fire of innovation. 🔥🔥 #amazon #innovation It always begs the question, we’re they a technology company or a retailer? It doesn’t matter, with $575 Billion Dollars in sales, they made their point! #technology JWO “JUST WALK OUT”: Amazon’s dream of creating a seamless shopping experience. I personally struggled with this concept, yes I could see it used in small convenience situations. But it just didn’t make sense in grocery stores. #groceryindustry The Retail Industry developed “Amazon Envy”, everyone trying to match Amazon creativity, technology and experience. #amazonenvy When customers were begging for exciting, emotional, entertaining stores, filled with compelling merchandise. Better know as JWI “JUST WALK IN”, Merchants understand the importance of creating a shopping experience. #tjx #target #walmart #fivebelow #costco #ollies #bucees #wholefoods The good news, retail is back thriving and growing.
