Every utopian vision stands on the rickety foundations of a dystopian society that must exist alongside the utopian one. Architects dream of a perfect urban environment where imperfections are surgically removed and exiled. But the exiled contents do not disappear. They are simply repressed. Like the example that Freud gave of the man who is asked to leave the seminar hall but remains outside banging on the door and creating a nuisance nonetheless, dystopia presents a challenge for the perfect vision of utopia. The task of the architect and urban planner is not divide the urban landscape into utopia and dystopia, but to assimilate the two into a wholeness. The man banging at the door must be let in again, and negotiated with so that the seminar can proceed without disturbance. #utopia #dystopia #dystopian #architecture #urbanplanning

Mutations. By architect, Rem Koolhaas. Re-examining this early 2000s text currently. Part of his Harvard University ‘Project On The City’. Not as frequently referenced as his tome S, M, L, XL, but every bit as informative to dispassionately documenting urbanism. Where one takes it from there is strictly your own choosing. Whether you’re a fan of his/his firm’s (OMA- Office of Metropolitan Architecture) work or not, there is something to be said for his willingness to document and interpret (sometimes insightfully, sometimes selfservingly) #cities. #urbanism #citybuilding

What is the role of historic preservation in modern architecture and urban planning? How do we balance the need to conserve cultural heritage with the demand for new development, especially in urban areas? I'm interested to hear your thoughts on the integration of traditional architectural elements within contemporary designs and how these can coexist harmoniously in our cities.

🌆 History of Urbanization: 3700 BC - 2000 AD 🌎 In the annals of human history, urbanization holds a pivotal place. From the dawn of civilization in Mesopotamia around 3500 BC, where cities with over 20,000 souls arose, to the sprawling metropolises of today, urban centers have shaped our societies. Architectural innovations, such as the ziggurats of ancient Ur, and meticulous urban planning, exemplified by the grid systems of Roman cities, have left an enduring mark on our built environment. #Architecture #UrbanPlanning #UrbanPlanning #UrbanDesign #History #Urbanization Via UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme)

Italian architect, historian, and restorer Gustavo Giovannoni was a key figure in the fields of architecture, #urbanism, and #conservation during the first half of the 20th century. His writings represent a significant step toward the full appreciation of the historic city, and his insights are directly relevant today to the protection of historic resources in urban contexts worldwide. Recently published, “New Building in Old Cities”, edited by Edited by Steven Semes, Francesco Siravo, and Jeff Cody is an abundantly illustrated critical anthology featuring many of Giovannoni's seminal texts related to the appreciation, understanding, and planning of historic cities. The readings are grouped thematically around key concepts in Giovannoni’s conservation theory—urban building, respect for the setting or context, a thinning out of the urban fabric, conservation and restoration treatments, the grafting of the new upon the old, and reconstruction. Undertaking a historical building project is a sensitive endeavor. At WhiteSpace Architects, we take the responsibility very seriously. With every adaptive reuse historic project, we aim to conserve resources and historic value, while prolonging a building's life with a modern approach. Our restoration of Bishop Bank was no different. We have more adaptive reuse projects for historical buildings in the works. Stay tuned to learn more about them! #adaptivereuse #historicbuildings #hawaiihistory

It is an incredible thrill to be invited to lecture at the IIT Architecture College https://arch.iit.edu/. Thanks to the contributions of Mies van der Rohe and Hilberseimer, Chicago is a shock city for my generation. My lecture, titled ‘Metropolitan Architecture Across Disciplines Boundaries: The Entangled Landscapes from Absent to Included Third,’ explores how landscape, often seen as an ‘excluded third,’ can become an integral part of a narrative that can promote agreement between peoples. Returning to Chicago means reflecting on the fundamental questions posed by this school, particularly regarding the regional dimension of the city and the multiple scales of urban phenomena. I question how new forms of landscape, networks, and architecture interface with the paradigmatic changes of contemporary cities and how Maria Villalobos' model of the “botanical city” can offer us tools to address the challenges of urbanisation. In this lecture, I will attempt to investigate the link between structures for greatness, image, and the metropolitan sustainable commons. It will be an opportunity to share ideas and reflections that I hope will contribute to a constructive dialogue about the future of our cities. #Architecture #Urbanism #MetropolitanArchitecture #IITChicago #DesignThinking

Part II | The Possibilities of Historical Reinterpretation Part II, encompassing various explorations of issues related to the renovation and restoration, reinterpretation and reconstruction of historic architecture, and through such diverse design research and theoretical depictions, provides examples concerning urban and spatial potentials as well as humanistic and historical reinterpretation possibilities within the realm of contemporary architectural design, aiming to enrich its methodology and vocabulary, ultimately leading to more profound and diversified practices. In this part, the focuses range from central historic urban blocks to contemporary historical urban districts in Guangzhou, and even broader indigenous areas in China, covering examples from the renovation of specific conserved architectural entities, the evolution of historical urban neighborhoods, to the reinterpretation of abstract principles from Chinese traditional architecture, and the further introduction of propositions for the revitalization of representative post-industrial areas in the United States.
