Here's what you didn't know about peace...
Well, peace in Ipetumodu/Ife community. 😊
_
Last month, October, I conducted a survey on the Ipetu/Ife community in Osun State, Nigeria to analyze the context of peace under the lens of the Institute for Economics & Peace Positive Peace Framework.
The goal was a data driven #SWOT exploration across the 8 pillars of positive peace (see image attached) in the said community.
Unlike negative peace, which in its simplest meaning refers to the absence of war, positive peace is the existence of conditions that prevent conflicts from erupting in the first place.
_
Through my research, data collection and analysis, I found that:
⚜️'Good Relations with Neighbors' is the strongest pillar in the community; 62.5% of the participants believe people in their community generally get along well.
⚜️'Low Levels of Corruption' is the weakest pillar, with 68.8% of the participants thinking that the community leaders act dishonestly.
⚜️56.3% of the participants trust the information shared by local news sources and feel that everyone in the community is treated fairly irrespective of tribe or religion.
This placed 'Free Flow of Information' and 'Acceptance of the Rights of Others' at the second strongest pillars of positive peace in the community.
_
To improve the conditions that form these 8 pillars, it is imperative that an action plan to this effect is drawn up. Based on my findings, I recommended that:
⚜️ Thorough community and stakeholder analysis be conducted for a better grasp of these factors;
⚜️A sustainability-based strategy be designed to improve these 8 Pillars across the Ipetu/Ife Community;
⚜️Collaboration between the various stakeholders is encouraged to facilitate and implement development initiatives across social, economic, political and technological grounds;
⚜️Further data-backed research be conducted to ascertain how the stronger pillars may be leveraged to improve others.
