After serving as a Morse code analyst in the United States Air Force, 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐬𝐨𝐧 is quick to note that military experience easily translates to the private sector. Indeed, many of the skills she mastered while a USAF Technical Sergeant (1980-1990) are particularly useful in her current role as an Accounts Payable Specialist at OTO Development. “𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘵𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘱𝘢𝘺 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪-𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘬 — 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘪𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘵 𝘮𝘺 𝘫𝘰𝘣 𝘢𝘵 𝘖𝘛𝘖 — 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘱𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘦 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱 𝘢 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘤 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘩𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦,” Sharon says. Being able to listen and type simultaneously — accurately — is a talent Sharon honed during her Morse code days. It’s a skill she puts to continued good use, processing the heavy volume of invoices that cross her desk while also taking calls from vendors and responding to emails. Working in that era of nascent technology required her to be endlessly adaptable to ever-evolving systems, a flexibility she maintains to this day. VSO is very excited to announce this month's veteran highlight! Meet Kendra Moore, a 5 year U.S. Army Veteran turned Associate System Administrator. We asked Kendra some questions about her time in the military and the insights she gained while in service: Q: Why did you decide to serve? A: After the events of 9/11, I felt a deep sense of duty and decided to serve my country. It became clear to me that this was how I could contribute and make a meaningful difference during a time of national need. Q: What was your life in the Army like? A: As an Air Defense Artillery officer in the military, I had the unique opportunity to work in a highly technical role that is exclusive to the military. I found great satisfaction in the specialized nature of the job, which allowed me to apply advanced technical skills in ways that are not commonly found in civilian careers. Q: What workforce skills did you develop while in the military? A: During my time in the military, I developed a range of essential workforce skills that have greatly contributed to my professional growth. I honed my time management abilities by balancing multiple responsibilities and ensuring that tasks were completed efficiently and on schedule. Conflict resolution became a key skill as I learned to navigate challenging situations and mediate differences in high-pressure environments. My communication skills were sharpened through daily interactions with diverse teams, where clear and effective communication was crucial. #VetsInTech #VeteranWorkforce #EmployeeFeature
