With the recent approval to fly drones beyond visual line of sight, Origin's drone pilots can now operate remotely from its operations centre, even managing drones at assets located hundreds or thousands of kilometres away. This includes using innovative drone-in-a-box technology, where drones can take off, land, and follow set flight paths autonomously, making asset monitoring safer and more efficient. Congratulations Matthew Jeffs and Barry Burke . It’s been a long journey but it’s so amazing to see all your hard work come together like this and for you to be able to push ahead with your drone program!
Congratulations! It is amazing to see organizations like Origin Energy adopt new technology and constantly innovate!
It's exciting to see how emerging technologies like drones are transforming asset management in the energy sector. This innovative approach highlights the growing need for advanced tech skills to drive the industry forward. Great example of how technology and expertise can work together to create smarter, safer solutions.
For transmission system voltage levels(say at 400kv OHL), how much can a drone get close to OHL? Electrical field generated OHL conductors could disturb electronics of the drones unless some sort of sheilding integrated in it?
Cathy Shannon you must be excited with this news! Exciting possibilities
Congratulations on using drone tec. Will come in handy for ROWs
Wow, exciting to see this application!
Congrats! Team job well done
Congrats to you and the team Matthew Jeffs and Barry Burke. Great to see your vision and hard work going live!

4wCongratulations to Origin Energy on receiving approval from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations. This is a significant milestone that not only enhances your operational efficiency but also sets a precedent for the innovative use of drone technology in the energy sector. The implementation of autonomous "drone-in-a-box" systems and remote operations from your Brisbane ROC demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to asset management and environmental monitoring. From a legal standpoint, securing BVLOS approval reflects a strong commitment to regulatory compliance and safety standards, which is crucial as drone technology continues to advance. As a drone lawyer (along with the great Tom Pils of course!), I recognise the complexities involved in navigating aviation regulations for such cutting-edge applications. Origin Energy's success serves as an inspiring example for other organisations looking to leverage drones to improve operations while adhering to the necessary legal frameworks. I look forward to seeing how this development contributes to the growth and acceptance of advanced drone operations in Australia and beyond.
