Meet Itsa, the Associate Director of Equity, People and Administration at Oregon Food Bank. “Oregon Food Bank has made internal changes to continue to put the community that we serve at the forefront and to make them the priority. That really speaks to our mission. If we’re serving a community, and our goal is to be community-oriented, we need to lead with actions and not just words. Oregon Food Bank does that, and it’s a really beautiful thing.” Itsa’s story reminds us that food justice centers people in their daily, lived experience. It means that communities have power over our own food systems and that we are able to make decisions about what we grow, produce, distribute and consume. When we envision communities who never know hunger, we envision communities who can access food with safety and dignity. The Food for All Oregonians campaign envisions an Oregon where all people have access to food no matter where we’re born. Get involved this Hunger Action Month with Food for All Oregonians to increase food access. FoodForAllOR.org/Pledge.

GlobalMedic launched the McAntony's Menu program nearly four years ago to address rising food insecurity, particularly in Toronto. As more people relied on food banks, the program helped increase the food supply by purchasing in bulk, ensuring efficient use of resources. Recently, volunteers from Local 416 helped out, recognizing the growing need and helping to give back to their communities.

🌟 DICP Food Pantry: A Year of Impact in 2024! This year, the DICP Food Pantry continued to provide vital support to Denver’s communities, addressing food insecurity and helping families thrive. Through over 200 pantry days, we distributed an incredible 207,062 pounds of food, serving 15,290+ individuals across the city. Operating with a client-choice model, we prioritize fresh, nutritious options like fruits and vegetables to empower families to make choices that fit their needs. Thanks to partnerships with organizations like Food Bank of the Rockies and Parker Task Force, we’ve ensured that healthy food is accessible to those who need it most. 🎥 Watch the full impact in our Annual Report video: https://buff.ly/3zBBEHC 💛 Together, we’ve made a difference—one meal, one family, one community at a time. Great to speak with Newsday Media Group about Island Harvest Food Bank’s record year of emergency food distribution. During our last fiscal year (July 2023 - June 2024), we provided approximately 18.7 million pounds of emergency food to our network of 300 member agencies and directly to our neighbors in need. This is a record amount of food, more than we provided any year during the pandemic, and nearly double from 2019. The need for emergency food is greater now than ever before. If you’re interested in learning more and getting involved, please message me. Food banks face more demand, potentially fewer shipments Long Island food banks are seeing more community demand amid concerns a proposed bill in Congress could delay shipments. https://lnkd.in/e8dN9YSz

✨ This week’s spotlight shines a light on Kapish Chhabra and the recent Vancouver Food Systems Dialogue held at Vancouver City Hall. Kapish is a Columbia College, Vancouver BC. student and Community Connections practicum student with the Vancouver Food Justice Coalition (placement co-facilitated by Vancouver Food Runners). As Kapish’s placement wraps up, he reflects on what he’s learned over the last six months and shares about the primary project he was involved with: the Vancouver Food Systems Dialogue. SNEAK PEEK: ❓VFR: Kapish, what are some of your key reflections from the Dialogue? What stood out to you that day? Kapish: One of the most striking aspects of the Vancouver Food Systems Dialogue for me was the active participation of elected City Council members. Their presence demonstrated a significant willingness to engage with community voices and collaborate on finding solutions to pressing issues within our food systems. It was encouraging to see elected officials taking the time to listen to the lived experiences and expertise shared by community members and experts during the Dialogue. Furthermore, the willingness of diverse stakeholders to come together and engage in meaningful dialogue was inspiring. It highlighted the power of collaboration in addressing complex issues like food insecurity and building more equitable food systems. I really liked how despite facing numerous challenges, including those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, community organizations and individuals demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability in their efforts to address food insecurity and support vulnerable populations. Overall, the willingness of elected council members to be part of the Vancouver Food Systems Dialogue signalled a positive step towards building stronger connections between communities and government and working collaboratively to address systemic issues within our food systems.
