The only question I used to ask myself when it came to my career: "What's the next linear step on this path?" Which meant, I went from one degree to another without thinking about what I REALLY wanted. It was automatic. It didn't require me to work too hard, and I was coasting. It sounds wonderful but that also meant waking up to go to work was an absolute drag. How I think about my career now: ✨ How will this role help me grow? ✨ Who can I learn from? ✨ Who do I want to be 5 years from now? ✨ How does this fit into my life? ✨ What skills do I need to learn to get to the next step? In this place, I CANNOT coast. I have to be intentional. It is not linear and often, I have to get out of my comfort zone. Ah, but I am much happier and I see myself grow each year. For some people, being person 1 works well. For others, being person 2 works better. Whatever the case is, it's important to find out and understand which of these you are. Otherwise, you might end up at 58 wondering why you didn't take more worthy risks. Happy Tuesday.

I was told to go to school. I did. I was told to get a job. I did. I was told to advance my career. I did. With each step there was always something to strive for. Another clear rung in the ladder to stretch and grasp. But when I started making music on the side, I noticed something different. There was no long-term striving. You either made something that sounded nice or not. You’d get the feedback right away. There was an intrinsic strive to improve. From that process, I started to learn to let go of the end goal and be in the moment. I started applying this to other parts of my life. When you begin to detach from the outcome, you will find that the process itself is the more important thing. You’ll: - prioritize learnings - shrink your expectation-reality gap - live a more self-directed and enjoyable life Detach from the outcome, nurture your interests, and focus on the process. ♻️ Reshare if you found this helpful
