The 2nd edition of Cine Bazaar is here. It is a platform for young filmmakers ( under 30) to pitch their ideas and raise funds for their films. India is a young country, with a population of 65% under 35. Still, we don't have enough platforms to support young creative minds. Every industry invests in new ideas or R&D, but the world's biggest film industry, India, has yet to invest in young talents. If we don't invest and support young talents soon, we will struggle to remain relevant in the global creative market. CineBazaar is a small initiative to support young filmmakers. We invite the film industry leaders to come forward and support the young filmmakers. In the first edition of Cine Bazaar in 2022, a project development workshop was organized and mentored by Oni Sen. Later, filmmakers pitched their projects to industry leaders. Two shorts, one live-action, and one animation film received full funding from Amadavad Films of Manish Saini. The films are in an advanced stage of production. Four other projects received the Alpavirama Most Promising Project award, and two received Special Mention. Cine Bazaar was India's first platform to support short films and documentaries. This year's call for entry is open. Shortlisted filmmakers can attend a project development workshop and a pitching session during the Alpavirama 2024. A panel of industry leaders will select the most promising projects for Cine Bazaar awards and stand a chance to raise funding for production and distribution. For entries, visit https://lnkd.in/de-HiVu6 Discipline of Film and Video Communication, National Institute of Design

I am going to be directing a feature in just a little over a month and it still doesn't feel real! So much talking and planning has gone into the past year, and now I'm watching things actually happen. As filmmakers raising money, we talk a lot about the money we need, but I would love to show you where we have put the money we have! We have been incredibly fortunate between our resources, connections, and investment funds to lock in some incredible locations. Namely - The Heritage Square Museum (pictured). This beautiful place holds a tour of Victorian homes that have been preserved since the 1870's. The value this location brings to the film is far beyond what a movie on our budget would normally receive. We are so grateful for the opportunity to shoot here and thrilled to see the final product of this. Our cast and crew. Being in the industry for as long as we have been, we were able to secure a seasoned, professional industry team. They bring a quality to the screen that is not just great - it's cinematic. Our last feature film (that is currently listed in Tubi's "most popular horror" category) was made on a very small budget, but distributors often assumed it was made for more than 4x its budget. What else do we need? We are still hitting limitations with a small budget and want to put our best foot forward. We have slots available to bring in a few more investors in the $5k - $10k range, and it would go a very long way for us. With additional funds, here are a few things we plan to add: 1. Upgrade our camera and work with more industry standard equipment. While we have great cameras and lenses in our kit, the more beautiful we can make this look, the more we can elevate this film. 2. More shooting days. Indie films often suffer from run and gun mentality. We're up against the clock, wrapping things up quickly, not getting all of the shots we need. This time, we want to take our time. Get those cinematic shots, slow down and make sure we are making something truly SCARY! 3. Additional crew. Another thing indie sets struggle with. While we have a very powerful team that is used to working on a small set, being able to bring on a few more roles would, again, give us more time and space to focus on what is bringing the best quality to the screen. A little bit goes a long way for this team and we have some very exciting outlooks for this film! I would love to hop on a call and walk you through what it would look like to join our team. Let's chat! DM me for more details!

Title: Mwizukanji Feature Film: A Catalyst or Roadblock for Cosmas Ngandwe's Career?🤷🏿♂️ As the highly anticipated premiere of Mwizukanji Feature Film approaches on June 29th, 2024, at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre, excitement and speculation are at an all-time high. With VIP tickets priced at K500 and Ordinary tickets at K250, anticipation for this event has reached unprecedented levels, with an estimated 2500 attendees expected – a historic turnout for Zambian cinema. For producer MR COSMAS NG'ANDWE, this film marks a pivotal moment in his career. The success or failure of this premiere could either catapult him to new heights or serve as a significant setback. With a budget of K850,000, surpassing all previous Zambian film productions, Ngandwe is confident that the film will not only meet expectations but also turn a profit. Despite the absence of a formal film body in Zambia, Ngandwe expressed gratitude to the Zambian government and other supportive institutions for facilitating the filmmaking process. His unwavering faith in his own abilities and the support of divine providence underscore his determination to succeed in this venture. With a cast of 350 members, the film promises to captivate audiences with its compelling narrative. While speculation abounds regarding its inspiration from social media influencer Mwizukanji, Ngandwe remains tight-lipped, focusing instead on the film's universal appeal and its potential to resonate with audiences worldwide. Ngandwe's commitment to inclusivity extends to the film's distribution strategy, with plans underway to ensure widespread accessibility across diverse audiences. As he aptly notes, Mwizukanji Feature Film is not just for filmmakers – it's a cinematic experience for the people of Zambia, Africa, and the world at large. With anticipation building and expectations soaring, all eyes are on Cosmas Ngandwe and his ambitious undertaking. Whether this film serves as a foundation for future success or a stumbling block remains to be seen, but one thing is certain – Mwizukanji Feature Film is poised to make a lasting impression on the Zambian film landscape and beyond. Explore the Anatomy of a Time Travel Thriller With This SXSW Filmmaker https://ift.tt/NmUqTHt Making its world premiere at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival, Michael Felker’s heady, sci-fi thriller Things Will Be Different is a perfect continuation of a budding indie film time travel genre that has found a home over the years at fests like SXSW and Sundance. Telling the story of two estranged siblings who hide out in an abandoned farmhouse that transports them to a different time, the story is full of interesting twists and turns that keep you asking continuously more questions. We sat down with Felker to talk about how he was able to conceive and plan his film, as well as offer any tips he might have for other aspiring indie filmmakers looking to concoct their intricate time travel features. No Film School: So tell us how Things Will Be Different came about. What drew you to write and direct a sci-fi time-traveling tale like this? Michael Felker: I think for me it just comes from the fact that I grew up watching a lot of sci-fi with my dad. His background is in engineering, so he's processes movies with a logical mindset. He ingrained that same type of thinking into me when I was younger and watching movies with him. I especially loved watching sci-fi films and time travel movies [with him]. Half the time I watch a sci-fi movie, I either call him to talk about it. Or, if we watch it together, we go to coffee afterward and just talk about the different theories, mysteries and see if we could piece together the movie’s puzzles. That's just like half the fun for us. So when conceiving this movie, Things Will Be Different, which does have a lot of time travel elements, that post-movie coffee talk was important to me. I always wanted to shoot a movie at this abandoned farm we have in Michigan. It just sits there unused and one day, I was finally just like, “ want to make a cool feature there.” So my dad and I just started spitballing ideas about what to shoot, and we came up with this movie that's just about brother and sister bank robbers who hide out in a safe house that hides them away in a different time. One of the mantras I have now when writing movies is that one of the best weapons you can have as an indie filmmaker is to make something that you've never seen before. And I'd never seen a movie where people go hide in a safe house that takes them to a different time before. My dad never saw that before either. That could lead to so many different possibilities. So, starting from there, the rest of the movie continued to move forward starting with that unique nugget. No Film School: In a practical sense, how does one come up with the different timelines needed for a time-travel thriller movie? How did you plan things out for the story of the film? Michael Felker: For my process, I just started planning it all in my head and then did a lot of vomit drafts. I wrote a vomit draft for this thing in six weeks, which was just me going l...

Paul Schrader’s Three-Pronged Pitch for Landing Film Investors https://ift.tt/q9Np6AI When Oh, Canada writer-director Paul Schrader speaks with potential investors, he gives them a simple three-pronged pitch: Number One: “Forget about getting rich. You're not gonna get rich, but I think I can make you whole,” Schrader tells No Film School. If you give Schrader $100,00 to make his film, he’ll ensure you get that money back. Number Two: “I'm gonna give you a film if you bring it up at a dinner party, people are gonna be impressed.” This is a very prescient observation of how rich people operate: they love bragging at dinner parties. That clout-chasing leads directly into point three for Schrader… Number Three: “I'm gonna put you on a red carpet in Venice, Cannes, or Berlin. You've made a lot of money selling tires, wouldn't you rather spend some money trying to do this?” Having written some of Martin Scorsese’s greatest films (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull) and directed many of his own, Schrader can safely assure that a new film of his will secure a buzzy opening at one of these premier film festivals. Richard Gere and Uma Thurman in 'Oh, Canada' via Kino Lorber Schrader has been making independently financed films using this equity financing approach for over a decade now. It kicked off with 2013’s The Canyons, which was a slightly different experiment in film financing. Back then, Schrader said to novelist Bret Easton Ellis: “The economics of film are such that we could probably just make a film ourselves. You, Braxton [Pope], and I each have put in $80,000. We could make this film.” The trio would also raise an additional $159,000 via Kickstarter for the project, an uncommon platform for known quantities to use at the time. The erotic thriller went on to star Lindsay Lohan and porn star James Deen. Schrader describes The Canyons “as a test to see whether it was possible.” While it was indeed possible, Schrader says he “would never do it again—it's a lot of work.” The real takeaway was the realization of the speeds at which you could shoot utilizing new technology: digital cameras, LED lighting—it was all “so much faster” and cheaper. This gave Schrader “the courage to write First Reformed,” he says. “I would have never written that because I knew the only way you could make it was in 19 or 20 days. I did The Canyons and realized I could do this in 19 days.” Schrader’s latest, Oh, Canada, was shot in only 17 days and reunited him with Richard Gere 44 years after American Giglio kicked both of their careers into full swing. American Giglio was Schrader’s third feature as director and was shot in around 45 days. The paradox of his new working method is that “you’re getting as much raw footage at 17 [days] as you used to get in 45,” he says. Coverage is primarily what you lose when you choose to make a feature in 17 days and Schrader has no problem with this. If you do a dolly shot, you don’t get the luxury of the master shot as...

How These Filmmakers Made a Micro-Budget Feature Without Film School https://ift.tt/QNZMmsa Written by Bertie Speirs and Samantha Speirs Following a limited theatrical run in the US, our debut feature film Midnight Taxi is now available worldwide on video on demand. The film is a murder-mystery thriller set almost entirely at night that follows a sleepwalking-afflicted London cab driver. When the cab driver wakes up from a night shift nap to find a dead body ahead of his cab, he does the logical thing and contacts the police. Soon, however, disturbing images enter his mind and he worries that he may have been involved in her death. Desperate to clear his conscience, he embarks on an amateur investigation across London to find out what happened…if he killed her and if he can trust his own mind. A third of the film takes place in a cab that our lead actor drove—for real—on London streets, and another third was filmed at real London locations and iconic landmarks… but on a shoestring budget and with just four daily crew members— including the two of us! Most of our money went on paying everyone involved (we strongly disagree with asking people to work for free) and we took advantage of the COVID locked-down London to shoot all over the city. We spent less than $1,000 on all locations. After a 23-day shoot and about a year and a half of post-production, we premiered our film in a central London cinema for cast and crew—but the journey wasn’t over! For the next several months, we navigated the unchartered waters of distribution. We eventually secured a deal that included a limited US theatrical run and worldwide VOD. Now that the film is going out into the world, we want to share how we—a pair of filmmakers who didn’t go to film school—made an entire film and got it distributed for less than the cost of a new London taxi cab. Before we get into all of it, though, here is a trailer to introduce you to the world of Midnight Taxi: MIDNIGHT TAXI (2024) - Trailer www.youtube.com Who Are We? We’re a British-American filmmaking duo currently living and working in London. We have spent over a decade working across the industry in Los Angeles and London. Originally starting with homemade short films and corporate video work, Bertie worked in post-production for Fox and ABC television shows and was the script coordinator for Chloe Zhao on Marvel’s Eternals. Samantha worked at United Talent Agency in LA, and as the director’s assistant to Jon Watts on Spider-Man: Far From Home and Tom Hooper on Cats. For many years, we had talked about pulling the trigger on our own feature film but it wasn’t until the pandemic abruptly shut the industry down that a fire was properly lit beneath our feet. In the summer of 2020, the first idea of Midnight Taxi was born as a very loose concept of a murder mystery in London involving a cab driver. For several months, we wrote and wrote (and then rewrote and rewrote) until we had a version of the story t...
